The business trip went really well. It was good to meet everyone in person and they were all pretty much what I expected/hoped they would be. I want to write about the trip itself (on the plane, in the airport) more but I’m tired so I’ll just talk about some of the practicalities resolved.
I signed a contract, which was nice because now I feel like I can count on a certain amount of money each month. It’s good until October and then we will all reevaluate. My exact duties are still a little unclear because there are two of us with the same title hired to do the same thing because it’s too big a job for one person. We’re not exactly job-share partners; we both have the same job and it’s going to be up to us to figure out what each of us wants to do. My boss knows what I like to do and I assume she knows my strengths probably even better than I do so I’m hoping she has some input. In any case, I’m sure it will take some actual time doing the job for T. (my co-worker) and I to figure out who is going to do what.
I’m not sure if I can talk publicly about exactly what I’ll be doing so I can’t give more detail; if it changes, I’ll start chattering more!
Brett and I are going to make one of those thermometers that they use in fundraisers, you know, that they color as the money comes in? We’re going to make one showing our (daunting) debt. We’ve already decided that most of my predictable money will go to that and we figure it’ll be easier to stick to the plan if we can actually see things getting paid off. Extra money — the part beyond what we’ve earmarked for debt — will go to practical things like sandals for Noah and replacement windows for the house. Contract jobs can be so wacky and we want to come out ahead even if they don’t rehire me in October. If we sock a bunch of this into the debt we’ve acquired since I quit my job when Noah was a baby, then even if the job disappears, we should be ok.
I have two kids and a delightfully odd husband, Brett. My children are Noah (born to us in 1997) and Madison (born to her first mom, Pennie, in 2004 and brought to our family through a domestic, open adoption). They are my inspiration and also the reason I don't get more done around here.
I'm a writer and sometimes I get published, which is a nice thing. I write for joy, I write for money and when I'm very lucky, both things happen at the same time. My work appears in national publications including Yoga Journal, Disney's Family.com, Utne, Wondertime, Brain Child and Salon. Currently I am working on a book about my daughter's adoption and seeking representation for the proposal. I also own Smart Cookie Communications with my husband.

That’s a great idea about dealing with the debt, making it visible like that.

Consistent, predictable is always a good thing! I aspire to it someday myself.

Sounds great, Dawn! Congratulations. And the ingenious debt approach! Awesome. This way you’ll *see* it disappear! Glad your trip went so well
