A couple of people on my very small writing lists were working some nifty travel assignments and posted about locations that still needed to be covered. They try to find nearby writers because the pub doesn’t pay travel costs. One of the jobs was in Ohio so I asked one of the writers to pass my name along. Hooray! I got the assignment! What does this mean? FREE VACATION!
It’s short notice so I don’t think I can actually put together a press tour but it’s all a write-off and the pay is enough that even having to shell out for costs we’ll still have some pocket money at the end of it. And it’ll be a nice clip, too.
It’s going to mean some craziness this month because I also heard back from one of my vacationing editors and got a big project due 9/28 and then whatever else I meant to cross-off my to-do list. BUT! We were just mooning around about how we wished we could get away but couldn’t swing it financially and now we can! It’ll be a working vacation for me but at least the kids (and the husband) can run free and it’s a part of Ohio we’ve been meaning to get to anyway. Now we’ve just try to put it all together and get a whole bunch of sight-seeing lined up.
I have two kids and a delightfully odd husband, Brett. My children are Noah (born to us in 1997) and Madison (born to her first mom, Pennie, in 2004 and brought to our family through a domestic, open adoption). They are my inspiration and also the reason I don't get more done around here.
I'm a writer and sometimes I get published, which is a nice thing. I write for joy, I write for money and when I'm very lucky, both things happen at the same time. My work appears in national publications including Yoga Journal, Disney's Family.com, Utne, Wondertime, Brain Child and Salon. Currently I am working on a book about my daughter's adoption and seeking representation for the proposal. I also own Smart Cookie Communications with my husband.

HOW COOL! I have actually queried for travel features before going on family vacations (thinking it would be appealing to the editors that I was going anyway and they wouldn’t have to foot the bill). But no luck. Yet. I should have done it before I went to Paris a few weeks ago. Doh!
Enjoy!

Too fun! We’re going to northern Minn and I can’t wait–it’s been way too long since I’ve had a vacation.
