I’m taking a break from contemplating edits (and doing very little writing but quite a bit of grouching as I contemplate). Brett sent me downstairs to work out on the ellipse machine so I did that and now I’m sitting in my sweaty work-out clothes updating my blog.
Florida was great despite the chicken pox. Madison loved the beach. We ran her hard every single day and realize that this is the key to decent naps — she needs way more big muscle activity than Noah did at that age. So today we took her outside and raced her around the backyard even though it’s 26 degrees. Normally I’d let the cold scare me out of being outside much. Well, not the cold so much as wrestling her into her mittens.
The other thing we thought about (besides chicken pox, exercising Madison and writing the proposal) is what to do about my job. There’s a very strong possibility that it’ll go in-house soon because of some restructuring I can’t talk about here — maybe in a month? That means I’ll be job-less. We’ve been talking about what we’re willing and not willing to do around the loss of income and it’s nice knowing exactly what we’re willing to put on the table.
We were smart (mostly) while we had the money. This job lasted much much longer than we expected and it allowed us to finance the adoption, to get a reliable car and to move into this house. We also paid down a lot of debt. I’ll still need to make money but we’re not sure the exact dollar amount yet. I can’t reasonably expect to make what I made before and that’s kind of daunting. I’m probably not going to talk about this that much because I’m instituting a no whining policy around our budget. We’ve been very lucky, we’re very grateful and we’ll deal with whatever comes next.
Last night Madison was standing between Noah and the television and he said, “Madison, move! I can’t see!” and she said, “You get your glasses!” You can tell that this is a child who has spent two weeks with grandparents who say, “I can’t see, let me get my glasses first.”
She just came over to me and sniffed my shirt and said, “Stinky” so I’m gonna take a tip from her and go take a shower.
I have two kids and a delightfully odd husband, Brett. My children are Noah (born to us in 1997) and Madison (born to her first mom, Pennie, in 2004 and brought to our family through a domestic, open adoption). They are my inspiration and also the reason I don't get more done around here.
I'm a writer and sometimes I get published, which is a nice thing. I write for joy, I write for money and when I'm very lucky, both things happen at the same time. My work appears in national publications including Yoga Journal, Disney's Family.com, Utne, Wondertime, Brain Child and Salon. Currently I am working on a book about my daughter's adoption and seeking representation for the proposal. I also own Smart Cookie Communications with my husband.

Having cold weather really doesn’t contribute to much fun (aka naps) around here either, unless there’s snow. X has been talking about going to the beach since October, so I envy you.
Sorry to hear there’s some uncertainty going on, but I’m sure everything will work out.
