We ripped down all the wallpaper in the front room and hall. We started taking the rug up to find out what the wood floors were like (they’re ruined, by the way). The towel rack keeps falling off in the bathroom and I just made an appointment for someone to come in and give us an estimate on replacing the floor in there. I need yellow construction tape to string over everything.
The walls are the worst because the walls in the hallway are olive green and the previous owners wrote their names in white on them. It was cute when we found the “secret messages” when we were taking the wallpaper down but now after staring at it for a week, it’s not so cute.
Since the floors are ruined we’re going to have to replace the (extremely ugly, extremely filthy) carpet. I have mixed feelings about this because in theory I’m not crazy about carpet. It’s toxic, for one. In practice, however, I like how carpet makes the room quieter and (in my opinion) easier to keep clean. In any case, we’re replacing the carpet. We talked to someone about redoing the floors but they said we would need to replace some of it because the previous owners apparently had a pet with bladder control problems. That’s not really cost effective so the decision was kind of made for us.
To keep costs down, we’re doing as much of the work ourselves as we can. We’re doing all the ripping up — of the bathroom floor, of the carpet and pad — so we’ll be moving all of the furniture, too. We have four huge bookshelves across one wall of the family room and a couple of other shelves on other walls and we’re going to have to figure out where we can store the books and the shelves for the project.
It takes about four weeks from the time you order the carpet until they come install it. It will be at least another week before Brett has time to paint the walls. (If my period comes, I can help with some of that but Brett would really rather do it himself.) Meanwhile, the shelves are pulled out slightly from the hideous, scarred walls and everything is in total disarray. I’m not sure when the bathroom will get done but they’re coming to measure tomorrow. Brett is planning on pulling up the old tiles and taking out the toilet himself. We have only one bathroom so maybe Noah and I will spend the day at Grandma’s during the installation.
I should just focus on how pretty it will all look afterwards, right?
I have two kids and a delightfully odd husband, Brett. My children are Noah (born to us in 1997) and Madison (born to her first mom, Pennie, in 2004 and brought to our family through a domestic, open adoption). They are my inspiration and also the reason I don't get more done around here.
I'm a writer and sometimes I get published, which is a nice thing. I write for joy, I write for money and when I'm very lucky, both things happen at the same time. My work appears in national publications including Yoga Journal, Disney's Family.com, Utne, Wondertime, Brain Child and Salon. Currently I am working on a book about my daughter's adoption and seeking representation for the proposal. I also own Smart Cookie Communications with my husband.

I can totally sympathize with the bathroom remodelling. We just had our one and only bathroom done last year– the contractor had to put us up in a hotel for three nights because they ran into problems and we had no toilet!! Good luck with all of it!
