Naming Meme
Aug 11, 2008 Parenting, The Story of My Life
(Seen over at Jenna’s livejournal)
Who named your child?: Brett and I named Noah. Pennie named Madison.
What did you name him/her?: Noah Ice. Madison Michael.
When did you come up with the name?: I can’t remember when we settled on Noah but it was probably somewhere around the end of the second or the start of the third trimester. We didn’t know if he was a boy or a girl so we had both a boy and a girl name ready. (Girl name was either going to be Sadie Friedman or maybe Ella Friedman. We were pretty cemented on Sadie but then while I was in labor listening to Ella Fitzgerald I changed my mind.)
Where were you when you came up with the name?: Probably at home in our apartment. We found out Madison’s name when we first met Pennie, which was at the German Village Max & Erma’s.
Why did you pick that name?: We picked Noah because we wanted him to have a gentle sounding name and I was rooting for a name from the Hebrew scriptures. (Brett voted down Eliezer so I named my hard drive Eliezer. Heh.) We rejected Simon and Linus and Milo (because we once owned a cat named Milo and my brother said, “If you name the baby that, I will tell him you named him after a cat that you gave away when you moved.”) I should have known that Noah would become mega-popular when every single person who heard the name loved it. If everyone loves your baby name then it will be used by everyone. Just be warned.
Back in my day, I’d never met a Noah who wasn’t Jewish so imagine my surprise when it became one of the most popular secular names ever. Plus since we homeschool, people sometimes assume we must be fundamentalist Christians what with the name and the homeschooling. I should have named him George.
Ice is my mom’s last name so he’s named for my mother.
Pennie picked Madison’s name after studying baby name lists; she just liked it. Michael is after her beloved brother who was named after her dad so Madison carries on her birth family tradition there.

Jul 22, 2008 Blogging
Abby did it and I want to do it, too. I’m a sheep. This first question is one I’ve written about before and it’s going to be in that Mothering and Blogging: Practice and Theory book coming out through Demeter Press. But what the hell.
1. Why did you start a blog?
Because I wanted to see what a blog would become. I was interested in it as writing practice and as a kind of living thing that I knew would change by virtue of writing for an audience in real time. Once I added comments, I really embraced the idea of writing my story with my readers.
2. Why do you continue to blog?
Eh. I’m addicted. I think therefore I blog. The writing practice of it isn’t as potent for me anymore because I don’t have the same time to put into it but it’s still valuable and the relationships I’ve made on-blog are hugely important to me.
3. Do you have a blogmother/blogfather?
Phoenix Amon (blog now gone) inspired my blogging. Of course I read What’s in Rebecca’s Pocket, too.
4. Any downside to blogging?
The timesuck of it. And those relationships I value so much? I’m really bothered by how little time I’m able to spend really nurturing those relationships — commenting on blogs and participating in discussions. I miss being able to do more of that. Just because I ain’t talking so much doesn’t mean I’m not reading.
5. Do your ‘real world’ friends know that you blog?
Oh yeah and back in the day they thought it was weird. Now a bunch of them have blogs so I guess I proved the coolness of it, eh? Or something.

Meme below the cut

I’m trying to stay out of Brett’s way while he moves the furniture (the steam cleaner people are coming in an hour) and I’m bored. So a meme.

Gimme five

Swiped from Susan!
What were you doing five years ago?
Blogs are convenient. Apparently I was buying a fax machine, feeling thankful about not being pregnant and writing one of my favorite blog posts.
What are five things on your to-do list for today (not in any particular order)?
It’s 5:46pm so I’ll list what I’m doing tomorrow:
1. Blog for a client, (which I do every Monday).
2. Get at least one book review done.
3. Follow up on one query and draft a second.
4. Write an essay due Wednesday.
5. Make a menu plan, a grocery list and then actually get out and shop.
What are five snacks you enjoy?
1. Popcorn.
2. Fruit — most kinds.
3. Goat cheese.
4. Almonds.
5. Buttered toast.
What five things would you do if you were a billionaire?

4. Retire.
5. Write a whole lot more.
What are five of your bad habits?
1. Snacking while I watch tv.
2. Whining.
3. Leaving my empty water glass next to the computer every single night.
4. Gossiping.
5. Filling out memes instead of, say, productively outlining an essay.
What are five places where you have lived?
1. California (where I was born and where Erica was born)
