1. This is from yesterday. You gotta love that expression! After we sang she said, “Awww, thanks you guys!” then she stuck her finger in the frosting. That’s my girl! (edited to add: Those marks on her face? Green marker where she made herself “look like a tiger.” It’s her new thing.)

2. I mean, really, is that the perfect birthday dress or what???

3. Gratuitous dress shot, from the back. This is Madison look out of Jessica’s front door at the grandparents arriving.

4. On the bike, wearing the tie-dye. (Shirt from Jessica, pants from Jessica’s dad.)

5. Finally a birthday pic of the birthday girl with Jessica and Nate. Isn’t Nate a cutie?

I knew the dress would be perfect for her! But she must be HUGE. It’s a 5, and E was wearing it just last week–it was shorter on her, which is why I convinced her to pass it on, but it fits Madison perfectly! (And remember the story I told you about E insisting that A in her class looks like Madison, and me trying to explain to her that all Black girls do not look alike, and then going into the classroom and realizing that A does look like Madison? We spent the afternoon skating with A–if Madison had shown up, everyone would have assumed that they were sisters!)

These are awesome, thanks for sharing! That’s a lovely lovely dress! And she does look big — very tall and muscular, I think she must be bigger than my 5 year old, really!

Nate IS a cutie! Denise and I just looked at all of these and ooh-ed and ahh-ed. Especially over the tye-dye outfit. We both want one. Pronto.

I looooved the dress. She’s big like Ariana though… but her feet look big. Seriously though, we loved the dress, too.

Ohhh, these are wonderful! Madison is so beautiful, as is Jessica! Yes, Nate is a cutie, and of course he has the best name ever!!

OHMY that is one cute girl, with one cute first mom (or is it birth mom?) and Nate. But that Madison is a sight to behold, I’m struck by how old she looks…like an old soul? I don’t know, but she sure is beautiful.

And the birthday party hosted by Jessica? How lovely. What a testament to open adoption all of you are - including the rest of your family!

About Me

I have two kids and a delightfully odd husband, Brett. My children are Noah (born to us in 1997) and Madison (born to her first mom, Pennie, in 2004 and brought to our family through a domestic, open adoption). They are my inspiration and also the reason I don't get more done around here.

I'm a writer and sometimes I get published, which is a nice thing. I write for joy, I write for money and when I'm very lucky, both things happen at the same time. My work appears in national publications including Yoga Journal, Disney's Family.com, Utne, Wondertime, Brain Child and Salon. Currently I am working on a book about my daughter's adoption and seeking representation for the proposal. I also own Smart Cookie Communications with my husband.
