This is Madison in the shirt she got from Grandpa M (J’s dad). Pretty cute, eh? And he got one for Noah, too, with his (Noah’s) name on it. Unfortunately since he was the one in charge of the camera for J’s visit last night, I don’t have a picture of them in their matching shirts.
Madison’s speech has gotten so much better just since Christmas. Isn’t there some theory about illness? That kids will sometimes come out of a cold with a developmental leap? She is consistently speaking in full sentences now (”I want the ball, too.” “The piano is on.” “It’s my turn now.”) and it’s becoming more clear — now even non-family members can catch the bulk of what she’s saying.
Her favorite presents? The kitchen set stuff Gram Pam (Brett’s mom) got her. She likes to make tea, pizza and yogurt. Noah’s favorite present? The hovercraft we got him and which already broke. Maybe that’s not such a favorite anymore. He was pretty excited about the set of Hardy Boys my mom got him, too.
I have two kids and a delightfully odd husband, Brett. My children are Noah (born to us in 1997) and Madison (born to her first mom, Pennie, in 2004 and brought to our family through a domestic, open adoption). They are my inspiration and also the reason I don't get more done around here.
I'm a writer and sometimes I get published, which is a nice thing. I write for joy, I write for money and when I'm very lucky, both things happen at the same time. My work appears in national publications including Yoga Journal, Disney's Family.com, Utne, Wondertime, Brain Child and Salon. Currently I am working on a book about my daughter's adoption and seeking representation for the proposal. I also own Smart Cookie Communications with my husband.

my little boy is 2 and 3/4 and he got a wooden stovetop and a set of plastic dishes for Christmas from his Aunts which he plays with every single day! He’s yet to tell me what he’s cooking but he puts it in a bowl or on a plate and sits down to eat it which makes me giggle!
Happy New Year!

She is quite the cutey! And it appears she would rather color on her hand than paper. That looks familiar.

Aaww…I actually saw a little girl in the grocery store last night that looked a lot like Madison, based on your photos. (I live in Washington, too, if Madison has any bio cousins here.) She sure was cute. I reflected upon how lucky you are. And how nerdy me and the other girl’s mother were, to be grocery shopping on New Year’s Eve with our kids.

She is getting SO BIG.
I don’t know about illness, seems like my kids mostly take steps back during those, but holidays and family gatherings always seemed to spur huge leaps, especially verbally. I wonder if that’s going on now, too, only it’s harder to see?
How do you track a kid’s development, once they get past the obvious milestones? Do you feel like you notice Noah’s developmental leaps forward, when they’re not the obvious ones like better reading comprehension, etc? I know you write in bits and pieces about that, but I was suddenly curious….
