Sad sad. Her boyfriend’s band was playing at an outdoor event so we went to hear him and Noah immediately hooked up with some friends and I hooked up with one of my friends and it was lovely and the band is great but no Jessica. She sings with them sometimes and I’ve never heard her sing yet. But we’ll get to sooner or later, probably this summer since they have a couple of other kid-friendly festivals to play.
Her boyfriend is so damn cute. Just gotta toss that out there.
This week is gearing up busy. We have something going the first three evenings — a career event, a Noah event and then a writer-ly event. No new work but something due on Wednesday that will take most of tomorrow and I’m getting further into my essay only all the headway is in my head and nothing has hit paper yet. I’m caught up on 100 Hats, too, so theoretically I should be thinking about doing something new. I do have a press release to write but that’ll be Quick and Easy — will probably do it tomorrow before I get to work on the assignment. Still, I feel like I should stretch myself with one new thing every week and if it’s not something someone else gives me, it should be something I make up myself. See, I have all of this time now.
That’s Sarah Vaughan singing for my avatar, by the way. Isn’t she beautiful?
I believe I forgot to mention that we signed Madison up for preschool this fall. I think it’ll be perfect. NAEYC-accredited, about 50% African American student body, only two mornings a week and then they take the kids swimming once a week. More power to them but how in the hell they’re going to get 16+ kids in their swimsuits, to the pool, out of wet swimsuits and ready to go home in 2.5 hours of preschool is beyond me. Especially if they plan to do anything besides swimming that day (haven’t seen the schedule but at the very least there will be circle time and snack). But more power to them. Madison will love it and now we don’t have to buy her swim lessons, which the budget appreciates. Perfect! All credit goes to AmFam who casually said, “Hey did you know that X preschool near you has NAEYC accreditation?”
Madison is very excited about preschool seeing as how she wants to be big now and get out in the world and do all the things that Noah does. Today she wanted to go with him and his friends to wander around the pond at this big event and I said she was too little and she clenched her fists so tight her whole body shook and she growled, “But I want to be BIG!” She was furious with me. God I love that kid!
I have two kids and a delightfully odd husband, Brett. My children are Noah (born to us in 1997) and Madison (born to her first mom, Pennie, in 2004 and brought to our family through a domestic, open adoption). They are my inspiration and also the reason I don't get more done around here.
I'm a writer and sometimes I get published, which is a nice thing. I write for joy, I write for money and when I'm very lucky, both things happen at the same time. My work appears in national publications including Yoga Journal, Disney's Family.com, Utne, Wondertime, Brain Child and Salon. Currently I am working on a book about my daughter's adoption and seeking representation for the proposal. I also own Smart Cookie Communications with my husband.

I didn’t know Jessica was a singer, how cool is that. Are you going to find a Pocahontas lunchbox for Madison? I have a thing for Pocahontas lunchboxes, that or a GI Joe one.
Madison is wonderful isn’t she? I love her too.
