I am just swamped

In: Writing, work work work

I’m doing research on an assignment and have barely had a chance to look up and notice what a beautiful day it is. (And once I did, I took my printouts and highlighter outside to work.) I just don’t have time to blog today but wanted to check in and wave hello to the internet.

It’s been a crazy day

In: Writing

I haven’t had time to update and don’t really have time to now. The holiday threw me off and then Brett just left for work so my childcare disappeared. We’re thinking this job of his isn’t likely to last long — not with my schedule heating up. I think he’s ok with this although frankly, [...]

Purpleaster’s frustrations

In: Book work

(Purpleaster has been reading me for like a zillion years, I think. Right BJ?)
Some of what she said (much edited):

I often feel like as a reader, the commercial process of book publishing is sucking out the personality of the writer, and making the books into a common mold, that sucks the individuality out of the [...]

On the plus side of the equation

In: Book work

Got my fifth agent rejection (nice and personal) and the good thing is that I figure the agents who say no are saying no for the same reason a publisher would say no. So it gives me a chance to consider that feedback and use it as I figure out what to do next. I [...]

If you do, just ask. I have yet to say no to anyone. I just want to control who looks at ‘em because I had issue with people swiping them or hotlinking. Keeping them behind a password means they won’t show up on google searches and that anyone wondering through my blog will have to [...]

"I'm compelled by language, so there are days for instance where if it sounds flat and dry I try to find something else to do that will help the book. That often means going to poets and reading poetry. That's my fuel tank. Voice and language is primary, and everything comes out of that."

About Me

I have two kids and a delightfully odd husband, Brett. My children are Noah (born to us in 1997) and Madison (born to her first mom, Pennie, in 2004 and brought to our family through a domestic, open adoption). They are my inspiration and also the reason I don't get more done around here.

I'm a writer and sometimes I get published, which is a nice thing. I write for joy, I write for money and when I'm very lucky, both things happen at the same time. My work appears in national publications including Yoga Journal, Disney's Family.com, Utne, Wondertime, Brain Child and Salon. Currently I am working on a book about my daughter's adoption and seeking representation for the proposal. I also own Smart Cookie Communications with my husband.
