Still. Nice to read: Columbus, Ohio, Tops the List of Best Cities for Black Famlies
(I’m trying to find preschools to check out. We’d likely not send Madison ’til she’s three-ish but it’s never too early to get started looking.)

Blog neglect

In: Race

I’ve been busy scouring this site for census information about Columbus-area neighborhoods. And the Great Schools site for more specific demographics.
The three neighborhoods we are considering all have less racial diversity than the neighborhood we live in now. This is troubling. However in at least one of the neighborhoods, we would still have quick access [...]

Speaking of hair

In: Adoption, Parenting, Race

I wanted to talk more about the argument I got in a couple of months ago with a couple of liberal white friends about Madison’s hair. Now this my side of things so take it with a grain of salt. I could be sorely misrepresenting my friends’ points; bear that in mind.

It was after a [...]

Frustrating days

In: Adoption, Parenting, Race

All of this talk about the impending baby have made Noah fidgety. We’ve had a ton of intense discussions lately and I’m plum worn out. First off, he got very upset when he learned that the baby will have a bottle. Noah was surprised to hear that my breasts don’t magically have milk all of [...]

Email galore #2: the agency

In: Adoption, Race

Looks like that adoption agency is pretty desperate for families. Listen to this:
I just talked w/our director about your [financial] situation. As we currently need couples for our African American infant program, she is willing to get your application ASAP for the program and you can wait until the day before group and assessment [...]

About Me

I have two kids and a delightfully odd husband, Brett. My children are Noah (born to us in 1997) and Madison (born to her first mom, Pennie, in 2004 and brought to our family through a domestic, open adoption). They are my inspiration and also the reason I don't get more done around here.

I'm a writer and sometimes I get published, which is a nice thing. I write for joy, I write for money and when I'm very lucky, both things happen at the same time. My work appears in national publications including Yoga Journal, Disney's Family.com, Utne, Wondertime, Brain Child and Salon. Currently I am working on a book about my daughter's adoption and seeking representation for the proposal. I also own Smart Cookie Communications with my husband.
