Here you’ll find: Madison on a pony (posing); three cousins, one skipping; an elephant ear covered in powdered sugar; a big brother deigning to ride a baby ride (and giving his sister bunny ears); the big brother being very bored and miserable and pouting on a ferris wheel next to his dad, who’s trying to liven things up; another elephant ear, this time with sugar and cinnamon; two cousins on motorcycles.

My point is that there is a public and a private experience of multiculturalism and that Madison has very little control over how other people choose to label her whatever her private (internal) identification may be. An awful lot of it is about context and the prejudices of the person before her. So I’m putting her in other contexts — with her first mom — to illustrate this. And also to point out that without her white parents visibly around her, any white privilege she has as a “mixed” child (debatable any way but something I hear implied) is moot. (You don’t have to click on every picture. Just click on the first one and then you can scroll through by using the arrow on the right side of each pic.) By the way, the last pic is one of my favorites — they’re looking at pictures of Madison just born and Madison is asking about the clamp on her umbilical cord. The one just before that I put in so you could see Jessica’s awesome afro. (She’s wearing braids these days though — that first pic is the most recent but you can chart Jessica’s “napptural” journey pretty well with these!)

Other possible titles for this post: Madison has the weight of the world on her shoulders, On top of the world, Ma! or Earth Day.

(You may ask yourself — why all the pictures of Madison? Where is Noah? Two reasons: We take a lot to send to Jessica and also Madison is A LOT more willing.)
