Noah’s placement test

In: Homeschooling

I always wondered where Noah would be in an actual academic environment and it turns out he’s about where I thought he’d be: behind in math and way ahead in reading.
The placement teacher wasn’t sure about where to put him in math because he’s not as behind as we thought he might be but we [...]

It never rains but it pours

Now I have three appointments tomorrow — two work-related and one braces-related (did I mention that Noah got braces?).
Speaking of Noah, he’s in his fifth year of baseball, playing for the same team on which he started as a wee t-ball player. Back then he hung back and watched the other boys scramble for the [...]

Quick homeschool post

In: Homeschooling

Since a couple of people mentioned that they hadn’t realized Noah is homeschooled, I thought I’d give a quick rundown about it. (I always forget that readership changes — in a few years people will write in saying, “Wait a second — Madison’s adopted?”)
This is my homeschool journey. (Brett’s homeschool journey was easier because it [...]

I wanted to write all the funny things she’s been doing lately but I’m not sure if she’ll let me since she’s using my right arm as a snot rag despite having a full box of kleenex at her side. Ok, I’ll try while her attention is on her orange juice.

She is heart-breaking in her [...]

Forgot that Karen asked

If Brett and I are and have been on the same page re., homeschooling. Mostly yes and occasionally no.
Brett was more pro-homeschooling than I was in the middle there but he also (rightly) felt that it was ultimately my decision since I was going to be the one home with him and giving up the [...]

About Me

I have two kids and a delightfully odd husband, Brett. My children are Noah (born to us in 1997) and Madison (born to her first mom, Pennie, in 2004 and brought to our family through a domestic, open adoption). They are my inspiration and also the reason I don't get more done around here.

I'm a writer and sometimes I get published, which is a nice thing. I write for joy, I write for money and when I'm very lucky, both things happen at the same time. My work appears in national publications including Yoga Journal, Disney's Family.com, Utne, Wondertime, Brain Child and Salon. Currently I am working on a book about my daughter's adoption and seeking representation for the proposal. I also own Smart Cookie Communications with my husband.
