Party rundown

In: Adoption, Family, Parenting

First off, the cake didn’t happen. Pennie called us Saturday night to ask if she could bring by some (a lot!) of food to store for the next day and we, of course, said yes. When she got here she told us that she and Nate took the cake to Nate’s sister’s house and somehow [...]

My girl steps forth gripping my hand

In: Family, Parenting

Today was homeschool gym stuff for both kids. First Pennie came over to pick up our kitchen-aid mixer and while she was here Madison had an unfortunate accident that resulted in her tearing a scab off her knee (it’s spring after all with bare knees and all the threat that goes with them). There was [...]

Oh how we shall eat!

In: Family

I told Pennie to send me the planned-for-menu so I could post it here. This is for Madison’s birthday party (copied and pasted as she wrote it with some commentary by me):

mini sandwich platter: mini buns [which she will be making because, as she said when I murmured that this was too much, "Dawn, I [...]

Family myths

In: Family

I mentioned in a previous post that my sister and I were talking the other day and debunking family myths and Chanie asked me to elaborate.
I can’t elaborate so much because these stories we’ve been telling ourselves as a family are sacred stories even when they’re wrong and even when the telling them has done [...]

Too much to say, too much to do

But first: I know it’s Happy St. Patrick’s Day but St. Patrick’s Day in our family is first and foremost my little brother’s birthday. Happy 36th, Justin!!!

I’ll be back later when my desk is more clear.

"But what I hope for from a book - either one that I write or one that I read - is transparency. I want the story to shine through. I don't want to think of the writer."

About Me

I have two kids and a delightfully odd husband, Brett. My children are Noah (born to us in 1997) and Madison (born to her first mom, Pennie, in 2004 and brought to our family through a domestic, open adoption). They are my inspiration and also the reason I don't get more done around here.

I'm a writer and sometimes I get published, which is a nice thing. I write for joy, I write for money and when I'm very lucky, both things happen at the same time. My work appears in national publications including Yoga Journal, Disney's Family.com, Utne, Wondertime, Brain Child and Salon. Currently I am working on a book about my daughter's adoption and seeking representation for the proposal. I also own Smart Cookie Communications with my husband.
