Good things about adoption
My promised post.
1. Adoption — when done right — gives women more choices. If a woman — for any reason — is not prepared to parent and does not want or is unable to have an abortion — for any reason — an adoption plan gives her one more option to consider. Having those choices — parenting, abortion, adoption — are vital to our reproductive rights. And, as always, the rest of us should keep our sticky little hands off any woman faced with making a decision about what to do with a crisis pregnancy.
2. Adoption stretches and challenges our ideas about what it means to be kin. It helps highlight the truth (and lies) about what makes a family.
3. Adoption can give families to children who need them.
4. Adoption can make parents of people who are unable, unwilling, or disinterested in reproducing themselves.
5. Adoption mixes things up. It can create transracial and transcultural families, which is another way to challenge our ideas about family as well as our ingrained beliefs about race and culture.
