I really want to win the category of Best Adoption Blog over at the Bump. You want to know why?

  • Because I’m tired of the same old cultural ideas about adoption getting play ALL THE DANG TIME.
  • Because adoption may be a miracle for the adoptive parents but it’s a whole lot more complicated for our kids, for our kids’ first parents and for the communities/countries that lose those kids.
  • Because if I won the $1000 grand prize I’d donate it to Ethica, who “advocates for national and international improvement of adoption practices, offering support, education and advocacy to all persons affected by adoption.” (per their mission statement)

I’m up against a lot of starry-eyed adoption ideas and I’d just like to see the more complicated view win out.

So please vote for me! (I wrote the organizers to ask about voting more than once a day and haven’t heard back so go ahead and click a bunch if you’re so inclined they said voting more than once a day is encouraged!! And ask your friends, please! I rarely grovel but I’m groveling!)

You would donate the money when you need it for yourself? I think you should keep the money and give half to Pennie and keep half for yourself.

I have to admit it made me feel a bit sad that the category was only open to adoptive mothers though. Is it because women who relinquish are not actively mothering so their blogs are not seen as adoption related or…I don’t know.

Anyway I hope you win Dawn and I hope you will not give the money away.

But Kim, I wouldn’t have earned it and if the other person wins she’s going to use it to adopt a baby so I thought it’d be nice to balance that by donating it to an organization that helps make adoption more ethical.

Also, I could USE the money but it’s not like I’ve got it in my budget sheet!!!

I voted for you! 1. because you rock and 2. because you don’t have the word “miracle” in your title. Good Luck!!!!

I think you’re terrific and as an international adoptee I congratulate you for advocating on behalf of new moms and dads, adoptees, and the families and countries that lose the child/dren being adopted. You’re a gem!

Thank you so much for thinking of Ethica! We’re thrilled about the prospect of a donation, but more appreciative of your willingness to raise awareness towards the more complex issues surrounding adoption. We advocate for all adoption community members, including vulnerable women and children who are coerced into adoption. Ethical, accountable, and transparent adoptions do happen but so much needs to happen to make sure that everyone involved is on equal footing.
    Thanks again!

  8. I just found your blog – someone tweeted about the contest and I followed the links to your blog. I also just spent the last hour reading back through your adoption posts – thank you for your honesty about the ups and downs of open adoption.

I think you earn it if you win. You earn it because you faced your insecurities and fears and let your sense of what is right be stronger. You kept Pennie close by because you knew that was best for little M.

You wrote many posts and that is work and shared your heart with us. You dealt with some harsh questions including my own at times.

    You earnt this.

If you must then keep half and give half to Ethica.

It’s good for your self esteem to keep some of the money you earnt it.

I want you to allow financial abundance into your life. You deserve that.
