Brett’s hours got cut again so he’s now working about 24 hours a week and our budget can’t sustain it. So he’s looking for supplementary work in the hopes that his friend’s business bounces back and he can go back to full-time. When he took the job there was over-time, too, so we were catching up on our debts then over-time got cut, one day got cut and now he’ll be down to working three days a week and we just can’t live on that.

The bright side is that it means we won’t need to pay for childcare since he’ll be home when I’m at the office but that’s kinda like saying, “Well, I lost one of my hands in the wreck but at least I don’t have to buy gloves” because with the hours being cut, we could only afford to pay a childcare person in dried beans anyway, which is to say that I’d rather be paying for childcare because I had the money to pay it.

So I’m worried. And my eyelid is twitching every time I think about money. Plus the engine lights on both our cars are on.

We’re dealing with it and trying not to lose our minds but maybe my posts will be a tad gloomy while I wrap my head around this new reality.

Oh, I so sympathise :-( Money worries are so draining, they suck the life blood right out of you …

  2. Bacchus says:

I’m sorry to hear about the cut hours. This economy stinks. I hope things start looking up soon.

Awww… I’m sorry. I know the eye-twitching thing very well… mine does it too, and often for similar reasons! I hate watching the bills and debts mount up, and knowing that there’s nothing much else I can do about it more than I’m already doing.

Anyway, a big virtual hug to all of you. Stay positive!

The cars always know when your finances change!!!

  5. Becca says:

Ugh. Ugh. Ugh. Ugh. I’m so sorry–both for the facts and for the worry.

  6. Thorn says:

I’m sorry to hear that. I deal so badly with money worries and it’s something I worry about a lot. I feel so incredibly fortunate that we have two relatively solid jobs; so few people who probably deserve them more seem to.

  7. Heather says:

    That bites. I’m sorry.

  8. Lisa V says:

Oh the damn cars. I’ve asked the gods for 12 months of no car worries and expensive repairs. I’ll put in a word for you too.

  9. Ugh. Sorry to hear it. I’ll keep my fingers crossed that something else comes along quickly. I feel like I should be losing hair with financial stress this year. It sucks!

P.S. I was recently told that you can go to AutoZone and have them diagnose engine light problem sources for free, instead of the $50-$75 most garages charge you just for looking. If it’s anything like exhaust troubles, try ExhaustWorks on the South Side (+ they told me do more than exhaust, but I’m not sure what). They have some poor right-wing humor crap taped to their soda machine, but they solved a problem other places said would cost me $800 for $170 earlier this summer, so, you know, I dealt.

No help on the engine lights, but it’s a great season for putting food by. Contact me if you want any suggestions.

We’re coming up on dance tuition…and I have no idea if our scholarships are continuing. Pretty scary.

  12. Julia says:

I am not happy about many things today and this is at the top of my list. Really, it is.

    I’m sorry Dawn.

  13. Meg Jeske says:

I hear you with the money challenges, and laughed at your not having to by gloves analogy.

    Thinking of you all.

  14. Lilian says:

I’m so sorry my friend! You know we understand those troubles very well. I hope he finds something soon.

  15. Jody says:

Damn. I’m sorry. I hope something good shows up soon.

  16. Ninotchka says:

Oh honey, I’m sorry for your situation. In this economy, we’re on the edge of our seats too. It sucks. :::hugs:::

  17. Ally says:

    Dammit. Sorry to hear that.

  18. Ally says:

Also, I drove for about a…year…with my engine light on before it got critical. Not that I would recommend it…ahem.

  19. Wow, that really sux.

I somehow missed this post before (lucky I get your posts in email, so I can come back to them when I have some time). Now your so called ‘whiny’ post of the other day seems even less whiny!
