Ok, so go see Madison reviewing the Vtech Bugsby Learning System, which she finds very amusing. I don’t love the electronic toys (except for my iPod) but I don’t think they’re evil incarnate either so when they offered to send her one, I said ok and figured she could review it for KidsKnowStuff.com. She was very happy to oblige. When I went down to get my camera, she practiced what she was going to say. I came upstairs and interrupted her sitting on the couch giving an earnest testimonial to an empty room — she takes her job seriously.
The first part is the part she planned and it’s where she stutters the most. Noah didn’t stutter at this age but he did have a nervous throat-clearing habit. I know it’s typical for kids this age to stutter so I’m not worried about it but I am curious because she stutters internally. She doesn’t say “M-m-m-madison” she says “Ma-a-a-a-dison.” I wonder about that. Anyone know how different kinds of stutters develop? Like lots of kids this age, her stutter shows up when she’s excited or a little nervous (like when all eyes on her). I know it’s ‘cuz her brain is feeling overloaded.
Please note her careful, canned wording, which includes (she planned this all herself):
- “For instance”
- “In no time at all”
- “For me, of course”
- And her tag line “I’m Maddie from Kids Know Stuff — Go!”
It’s really cute if I do say so myself!

Oh good lord. So stinkin’ cute that girl. What do you think about all those newfangled reading systems? We haven’t partaken of any yet, but wonder if its a good idea… do you like the leapster, “for instance”:)(i.e. does she?)
She loves her leapster but I don’t think much of it one way or the other. I do appreciate it’s entertainment value when I’m doing her hair (because she plays one of these e-games then). I don’t think they help learning but I don’t think they hurt it either. (She’s not reading but she does like the math games a lot but I’d say both would be true whether or not she had the Leapster or this other thing. She also has a Leappad, come to think of it.)
I’m so impressed I don’t know what to say…it’s hard to remember she is so little…wow…too cute.
First, agree, based on my own experience that they dont do much to help but they dont hurt. For me, they were kinda like fun reinforcements of reading. My oldest son disliked them. My youngest loved them. Whatev.
The stuttering question is interesting to me. Let me offer this. I have kind of this issue professionally. I get anxious and worked up and talk too fast and sometimes use the wrong words. Its something I work on. Its annoying to me. I think its just social anxiety. In small groups, where I am the expert, known, etc. I am quite good but other times, wow, I am a stuttering idiot. It is like my mind goes faster than my mouth. Exactly. I have been this way since I was a child. Frustrates the heck outta me. (Even graduating from Dale Carnegie training failed to help). Curious what your other readers will say.
Cant watch vid from work. Will do so later. No doubt she is adorable.
Oh, she’s just absolutely gorgeous, this girl of yours (plural)! I’m amazed every time. I loved the closing line too!
Oh my GOD that was SO ADORABLE. I heart her.
I mean, I knew she was articulate…but I DIDN’T KNOW she talks and communicates like she is so much older!
Way cute that girl of yours.
I noticed the book was a ‘Wonder Pets’ book.
