Writing to level up

I’m gloomy because of McCain not caring if women die and rolling his eyes at Obama for apparently not knowing his place. I’m going to list Happy Thoughts, dammit, especially because my across the street neighbor didn’t wave when I drove by (she glanced at my van then looked away — usually she smiles and waves) and I noticed she was wearing a 2nd Amendment t-shirt so maybe she hates my Obama sign. (sigh) Plus a kid in Noah’s Hebrew class told him that Obama was anti-semitic. How depressing is THAT???

Enough!! On to the list!!!!

  1. Noah and his friends were breakdancing in front of the rec center after homeschool gym class. Then Noah tried to do a freeze and couldn’t do it so he said, “Oh snap!” Also he kept saying, “Oh no he didn’t!” every time McCain would roll his eyes during the debate last night. That made me laugh.
  2. Madison is cleaning her room. I tricked her into it by casually saying, “Hey, I totally don’t want you to clean your room AT ALL but could you pick up all the clothes on the floor and just put them on the bed so I can put them away later?” Then I said, “That’s great! I wonder if you could happen to perhaps fit those books on the floor back into the bookshelf?” Now she’s cleaning off her desk. Heh. Kids are gullible!
  3. Today is Thursday. That means potluck. That means restful conversation and friends. All hail Thursdays!
  4. It’s cool and gray out and looks like fall. It’s lovely. Plus I got to officially break out all of my sweaters and since I’m sick of my summer clothes, this is happy, too.
  5. We have mini-chocolate chips in the house. That means COOKIES! As soon as Madison is done in her room we’re going to whip up a batch for potluck.
  6. My kids are gorgeous. I don’t mean to brag but they are. And funny and smart and generally nice people.
  7. My husband is nice to me even when I’m nasty to him. I’ve been a terrible grouch this week and visiting way too much of it on him. Thank god he’s patient. I would have kicked me to the curb by now. (I’d send myself to my room if the kids wouldn’t follow me.)
  8. The house is trashed but … but … (I’m trying to wring some happiness out of this but am coming up blank. Wait! I have it!) The house is trashed because I’ve had a lot of work. I won’t mind the mess when the checks start showing up and meanwhile I have some time this afternoon to make a dent in it.

OK, I feel better now. Mostly.

  1. A friend told me about his daughters school “friends” explaining to her that she’s a bad person because Obama kills babies. WTF!

I’m going to try and get on the good foot too though so my list is that I get to go camping’ish this weekend. I put together Sophie’s first bicycle for her 2nd birthday (shh, she doesn’t know yet). I am feeling unusually confident about Obama’s victory in November today.

Have a great potluck - so sorry again for missing you guys yesterday!

  2. grumble…grumble…grumble… This week is just a drag all around it seems.

  3. Oh! Dawn you were in mind yesterday when Obama mentioned adoption (did he say open adoption, is he that progressive? I didn’t notice and now I don’t remember). And, I had a hard time hearing his opponent describe the other (just another?) side of the argument as pro-abortion. I jumped when Obama corrected him by saying ‘no one is pro-abortion.’ You see? I think that by polarizing the issue so much we keep apart from each other….anyway, I hope I didn’t get you too far away from your happy thoughts….

  4. You’re so cute, Dawn. I wish I could come to your potluck. And I would ALWAYS wave & smile at you if I were your neighbor. :)

  5. Have you seen this?

    women for mccain! haha

  6. 8. The house is trashed but that means you have people around you to trash it, and maybe even to help un-trash it too! You live in a HOME blast it, not just a House!

  7. Dawn, I’ve actually been wanting to ask you how you feel about Barack Obama’s strong statement for a united Jerusalem, which he retracted the next day as “unwise”. On Israel, both he and some of the people on his campaign fall very far short, in my opinion. How do you view his commitment to Israel? I’d love to hear your opinion as it is a big sticking point for me at the moment.

  8. was it tracy??? she read michelle the riot act about her yardsign. i think she must know better than to say anything to me. ;)

  9. I really liked this post & am another who tries to see the good even from the gloomy moods (& believe me I’ve had some good lot of practice recently).

  10. Kohana, I am the wrong person to ask about this. Israel was never something my parents discussed, I don’t have enough understanding to have an informed opinion and it’s not an issue I’ve felt strongly enough about to sit down and figure it out (in part because it feels overwhelming and confusing to me). I mean, I tend to look at Israel from a peace in the middle east issue (and I sure have no idea what makes sense there) and not as a Jewish issue. I’m still trying to make sense of what Noah’s learning at religious school so I can feel like I can talk intelligently on it. It’s totally over my head.

  11. Bluecat, your take on a messy house is the best one yet! I will remember it and THANKS!!

  12. “Kids are gullible!”

No thanks to “Mary Poppins,” my children are now aware that grown-ups use strategies to get them to do things. Instead of focusing on the sugar, they are aware of the spoon. Darn you, Poppins!
