The Franklin County Fair, to be exact. It’s going to be killer hot out there but that’s our tradition — my mom takes my family and my sister’s family out and spoils the kids rotten with elephant ears and lemon shake-ups and deepfried pickles on a stick! (Ok that last part is theoretical — none of us have actually BOUGHT the deepfried pickles on a stick but they’re available!)
It’s a pretty small fair although I remember it being HUGE back in my teens. Or at least not quite so dinky. We used to walk up and down the tiny fairway hoping to catch the eyes of the boys wandering by in their black rock-and-roll tshirts. It’s Hilliard and that was the 80s so I’m sure there were lots of mullets but we try not to remember the bad times — only the good!
Brett and I always skip the state fair — too hot! too crowded! too headache-inducing! — but one or the other grandparent takes Noah and eventually they’ll add Madison to the mix, I’m sure. This year we may HAVE to go because Kristen has a picture of Madison’s feet (and her daughter Ginger’s feet) in the art show. Then again, I saw the photo in her living room so perhaps I don’t need to brave the crowds to see it again, right? I’ll just make sure the grandparents know to look!

I freaking LOVE the Ohio State Fair! I’m actually toying with coming home JUST TO GO! Will you come hang out with me if I do
I’d hang out with you but probably not at the fair!! (Because for one, you can’t even talk at the fair! There’s too much fair to make hanging out feasible!!)
I loved the state fair growing up, but prefer to avoid it now. It’s hot, there are tons of people, and I feel like I might as well open my wallet and just let the money fly away.
We’ve made deals with the kids the last couple of years, alternate activities to the fair- the water park, or a trip to an amusement park a couple of hours away (way better rides than the fair). This year I got them to agree to go the Shakespeare Festival ! They are putting on “Into the Woods” and it’s supposed to be a really fabulous performance.
It’s their debut! You will go see those feet damn it! They will look even better hanging amongst the other pieces of art!! And you should try the deep fried pickle on a stick-cuz they are YUMMY!!
I still love the fair. It’s hot, it’s noisy but where else can you eat a deep fried Twinky. Oh so good!
Small world alert: My little brother was one of the jurors of the State Fair fine arts show this week, so he may have been responsible for choosing Kristen’s photo of Madison’s feet.
He usually does the amateur division and he has an eye for seriously fun work, so I would second the motion to brave the fair to see the feet.
I’ve also heard there’s a picture of my husband and son and Little Brother’s sticker-covered walk-in cooler in the show somewhere.
Tracy, I really don’t get why we didn’t all know each other before blogs. Columbus is one SMALL TOWN!! Alicia is saying that going to the opening — before the fair opens — is a low-key way to see the pics so I think I will head to that!!! Maybe we’ll see you there?
deepfried pickles?!
