“Mom always liked you best!”

Inspired by a weekend conversation.

I love Noah best because he loves showtunes as much as I do and when he was a baby, he’d stop cycling his little arms and slow down just to stare whenever one of my co-workers started to sing “Summertime.”

I love Madison best because music — any music — makes her dance and skip and spin and she can sing along even when she doesn’t know the words because she somehow always knows the tune.

I love Noah best because of his dignified discernment when he meets new people.

I love Madison best because of her exuberant enthusiasm when she meets new people.

I love Noah best because I knew him before he was born and his arrival made me a mother.

I love Madison best because of the yearning that came before her and because her arrival gave me a whole new world.

I love Noah best for his sly, dry sense of humor.

I love Madison best for knowing how to make us laugh before she could talk.

I love Noah best because his worry and caution are both so familiar to me.

I love Madison best because her optimism and excitement are both so inspirational to me.

There’s no contest; they are each absolutely my favorite kid for totally different ways. (I bet any parent of more than one child — regardless of how those children arrived to the family — can relate.)

  1. I think you meant that you knew Noah before HE was born, but then again, I could be wrong.

I so get this post. The ways in which our children are precious to us are so particular.

  2. Awww, this is wonderful, just wonderful. *sniff* *honk*

  3. Dawn, this is a lovely post, indeed.

Isn’t it amazing the way two seemingly opposite personalities can evoke just as much admiration and love from one person? The way you can identify with one trait and draw inspiration from another are great examples of the depth and breadth of love.

    Just wonderful.

  4. Ooooh, it seems very daring to me to admit to liking someone best, even as you’re liking someone else best in the next line. I often have the thought, but I’m afraid to acknowledge it, even to myself, for fear of ??????
I think I’ll have to try it, stretch my comfort zone a bit.

  5. Oh, this is absolutely beautiful!!
