I’m accidentally missing a meeting

Brett hasn’t come home with the car yet — I think he thought my meeting was later. It’s ok because it’s a large scale networking thing so if I’m not there no one is being stood up. And really, being home instead is not such a bad thing. Besides it’ll give me some extra time to get ready for a client meeting tomorrow.I’ve learned the secret to not feeling totally tied to any particular outcome on any particular job/potential job — have a lot of other things going on. I put a bid in for a job last week and I know they were seriously considering me because of my handy-dandy stats program (I could see them coming in and checking my portfolio several times over the course of a week) and, too, my contact there was very encouraging but I didn’t end up getting it. It would have been a lucrative addition to my portfolio but you know, it was fine. It was fine because 1) I know I was a contender, which felt positive; 2) they were pleasant to work with during the bid process; 3) I’m now in their freelance files; 4) I have other irons in the fire.

I tell you, it feels good.

The other thing is that everyday since January 1st I’ve been writing down two goals. One is personal and one is professional and they’re both specific but general enough that if I reach those goals, it means I’ve got a history of positive things behind them. Now I was a skeptic about writing down your goals — manifesting your dreams with your powerful dryerase markers! — but now I see the point. Every time I write them down (I do it every morning when I first get into my office) I confront my fears about succeeding and say “to heck with ‘em” then write it. I used to kind of flinch when I wrote. I mean, who I am to say that I could do this thing I want to do? And in the time I want to do it? The other thing is that it gets me thinking about how I can work towards those goals today. It orients me towards them instead of a vague “be more successful!” But it’s not as limiting as a specific “land 5 more clients this month.” It gives me more room to nail it.
