I wish I didn’t write in the car

Because when I write in my car I’m writing in my head and it never gets to paper. I was writing last night on my way to a board meeting (with women like this and this and this and this and this among many others) and by the time I got home I had nothing. NOTHING. Ugh. I am so frustrated.

I couldn’t wait to get to my desk this morning but first I had to do work. Stupid work. And there was all this email. Stupid email. And then I had to eat lunch. Stupid lunch. Then Brett wanted something. I can’t call him stupid because I’m still fond of him from being missing last week. Oh, I know — Stupid wanting something.

Maybe if I go for a walk…

Well, I can write about the board meeting anyway. Dames Bond is a networking group but oh so much more! The creator of said group, one Ms. Mary B, has vision and charisma to burn and so when she invited me to be on the board I said yes. (First I checked to see if she was talking to someone else because I have low self-esteem.) Anyway what I like about the group is that it reminds me of working at the shelter because it’s over-run with feminists. I enjoy a networking group that rather aggressively honors diversity. So now I have one networking group that is rather pure networking (the chamber of commerce) and one that’s rife with mentors (NAWBO) and one to meet my spiritual/social needs (and in which you can’t swing a dead cat with hitting a feminist).

But I still can’t remember the great lead I thought up last night in the car.

  1. That happens to me all the time. I have my best ideas in the car and it’s impossible to write and drive. It also happens in the shower and more often then not, by the time I get out, it’s gone. Poof!

  2. Yes! The shower!! If someone could invent a waterproof laptop…

  3. Yeah! I’m a big note taker for this very reason. I try to hold onto the idea, but it’s like water. Sometimes if I fix the visual scene to my idea, I can remember by remembering the scene. Or I try to talk about it out loud so I have another fix on remembering it. Or sometimes, I say buh-bye… it was a lovely idea, whatever it was…

  4. I’ve thought about getting a little tape recorder for the car for this reason, but, something I discovered recently? My new phone has a voice recorder. Cool!

Of course, I’d wreck if I had to figure out how to use it while driving.

  5. I was just going to suggest a little digital recorder for that very purpose, but I see someone beat me to that. :D

  6. Recorders don’t work for me because I think with my hands, you know? I can type out what I mean much more easily than I can say it. In fact saying things out loud can sometimes kill ‘em quickly. It’s just the way my writer-brain works.

  7. I totally understand, Dawn, and I actually relate. Must be why I fizzled out on my own tape recorder. Heh.
