First day of school
Well, the first day of virtual school is a little rough. I don’t think the web site is as intuitive as it ought to be. Last night I went through and pulled all the printable stuff and put it in a Monday through Friday stack of plastic trays but Noah is having a tough time figuring out what he’s supposed to read. Then we realized he’s missing some of the non-consumables (books and CDs).
A lot of the lessons are the kinds of stuff that made me crazy both as a kid in school and as an adult proofreading elementary textbooks (SRA/McGraw-Hill is here in town and pretty much every one here who’s made any kind of living as a writer does a stint or two there proofing textbooks). You know stuff like, “Open your book. Where is the copyright date? Write the copyright date down here. If you wanted to learn about unclogging a sink, which chapter would you look at? Check the index and write the chapter down here.” I’m not making Noah do any of that. I told him to look at his book. I’ve shown him all that stuff before just as a matter of course while we’re reading together.
For all his whining you’d think we were putting him in a very strict military school instead of a relaxed virtual school. I don’t know if I can put up with that much whining before 9am. At least not without at least two cups of coffee.

I missed this. Do you have an entry about the virtual school/decision to use the virtual school? Can you link a reminder? I am woefully out of my usual blog loop these days!
