Thank heaven for Susan Ito
Jun 19, 2007 Adoption, Race, Writing
I called Susan to talk over the edits with her. I figured she’d be perfect because 1) she’s a fabulous writer and editor; and 2) she works for PACT.
My instincts are good because Susan is a wonder.
I’m still dismayed by how much colorblind racism are in the edits but I also think it speaks very importantly to my need to write a better essay to address it. I was also relieved to hear that the racism isn’t all in my head. Sometimes I don’t trust myself because I’m new to unpacking my privilege in such an intimate way.

omg Dawn, I just saw this and now I am blushing my head off.
BTW, I think this is going to be a really great and important piece of writing.

And PS. You are NOT FAR OFF at all from that “better essay.” Like, a small handful of sentences will do it. Really!

PACT is awesome. They are literally 1/10 of a mile from my home. I know a couple of people who work at PACT and totally respect their work. They are a good bunch.

I’m proud to say I’m a PACT member and I just went to their workshop on Transracial Adoption last weekend. It was fabulous, just as you’d expect.
Perhaps they could induce you to come out and be a special speaker some time?

Yay for all the PACT fans! And believe me, I am going to do everything in my power to get Dawn & family out to Pact family camp one summer….

I love PACT too. I wish you had some east coast camp for us to go to.

cloudscome, we discuss doing an East Coast camp… If we had a co-sponsoring organization we would certainly consider it.

so what would a co-sponsoring organization need to look like? Maybe we could put that on our east coast to-do list or something.
