At the park

Nearly every time we go to the park by our house there are other children with brown faces. What’s interesting to me is that there are a lot of biracial kids. I have no idea why this is but I noticed it when we first moved in and I saw kids going to and from school. There are a lot of kids who look like Madison, more so than in our old neighborhood where I saw white families and black families but only one other multiracial family.

Today at the park I sat and talked to a dad who’d also adopted transracially so there were his kids and then there was a little boy who came and sat next to me for awhile and chatted. He said, “Did you notice that I’m part-black? My dad is black.” (He said this when I asked him if he lived near the park and he said no that his dad did and he was visiting his dad for the weekend.) Another biracial boy sped by on his bike. As we were leaving a family came — three kids, white mom, black dad. It’s clear that this is an area where it’s acceptable and comfortable to be a multiracial family. (It has been for us but we’re still pretty new to this.)

My hopeful conclusion is that if Madison does go to school, this will be a district where she’ll feel comfortable with her biracialness.

I’m glad we live here.

how lovely to feel at home there, to recognize your family in the families around you.
