Big project off my desk

Thank goodness. At least for now. The second one is due end of the month so I’m taking a breather. I have several smaller jobs to do but my plate isn’t too full. All of my work has found me so far so my goal for May is to find one job on my own. I talked to Julia this morning and told her the thing that I find most surprising about corporate writing is how much easier it is than consumer writing. It uses different writing muscles but the biggest difference is that what you’re supposed to deliver is so much more clear. There’s also a lot less prep work. You know, Julia told me to get into this about a year or so ago and I felt like I didn’t have the expertise for it and now I wish I’d done this a long time ago. Oh well. At least I’m doing it now, right?

I haven’t gotten much further on the essay I started last month but I’ve lost interest mostly. And I’m thinking more about the book project and thinking what I want my sample chapters to be. I’ll do the first one as the intro chapter (of course) — explain my personal interest in open adoption and do a quick overview of the history. The other chapter I want to focus on a particular aspect of openness in international adoption. I’m thinking about that because I know many people aren’t aware that there is openness in international adoption but also because I want to talk about the way that the American attitude about openness impacts the way people think about adoption in general and apply to their international experiences.

I want to find a story here in Columbus because I want to do face-to-face interviews and it would just be easier not to travel. (And more affordable.) Also the National Center for Adoption Law and Policy is here so that’ll make some of the research easier. And of course Marley Greiner is here and way back when I was researching antiadoption she was open to meeting so I’ll hit her up again. (I’m a little intimidated — she’s one smart cookie.)

    Completely agree.

  2. Yes, I love some corporate writing - the pay off comes a lot sooner like you said. And with consumer writing you have to build up the story. A lot of times, it’s just figuring out what is the hot button for the market and writing to that in the head or sub and/or the problem/solution.

You keep saying I need to submit an article or two…maybe in a year I’ll be ready.

  3. You need to talk to someone abot opening an international adoption? Email me.

And yes, I have the easiest job of any writer anywhere, because it’s all corporate marketing.
