Duets

For no reason but because I felt like it. I was working out and Beecharmer came on just after The Simple Story and they sounded so nice together, I made a mix CD for y’all.

  1. There’s A Hole In My Bucket ~ Harry Belafonte & Odetta
Your kids might like this one. (Mine do.)
  2. Baby It’s Cold Outside ~ Home & Jethro, with June Carter
I know this is kinda cheating since it’s a trio but they’re singing it like a duet so I’m leaving it.
  3. In Spite Of Ourselves ~ John Prine & Iris Dement
Not a kid-friendly song, just in case you were thinking of playing it. But a pretty damn funny bit of romance.
  4. You Are My Sunshine ~ Elizabeth Mitchell & Daniel Littleton
Ok, this one you can play for the kiddies.
  5. When Love Is New ~ Dolly Parton & Emmy Rossum
  6. Beecharmer ~ Nellie McKay & Cyndi Lauper
This is one of those songs where all of a sudden I’ll just need to hear it, I have no idea why.
  7. The Simple Story ~ Jane Birkin with Feist
See? Doesn’t it just fit with Beecharmer?
  8. Kindgom Of Rain ~ The The (with Sinead O’Connor)
This is old-school Sinead O’Connor, circa Troy.
  9. Without Blame ~ Ismael Lo & Marianne Faithfull
  10. Dimming Of The Day ~ Richard & Linda Thompson
This may be the saddest duet ever.
  11. I’ve Seen ~ Bjork & Thom Yorke
This is a pretty sad duet, too, but only if you’ve seen the movie. Bjork is a hit or miss artist for me but I think this song is just about perfect.
  12. Candleland ~ Ian McCulloch And Elizabeth Fraser
From Echo and the Bunnymen and the Cocteau Twins, respectively.
  13. Barcelona ~ Dean Jones & Susan Browning
They recorded this in one perfect take. (It’s from Company, the Sondheim musical.)
  14. Well Did You Evah? ~ Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra
I love the way that they play themselves in this one, especially when Frank says, “Don’t dig that kind of crooning, chum.” This is, of course, from the film High Society. If I really had it together, I’d have the Debbie Harry/Iggy Pop version ripped but I don’t. Still, that one only works if you know/love the original, in my opinion.
  15. ’s Wonderful ~ Dinah Shore And Buddy Clark
  16. Passing Strangers ~ Billy Eckstein & Sarah Vaughan
I knew I was going to marry Brett when I was lip-syncing (very dramatically, lots of fluorishes) this song to him and he started lip-syncing it back even though he didn’t know the words. We still do it but only if Noah’s around so we can embarrass him.
  17. At Last ~ Lou Rawls & Dianne Reeves
I love Dianne Reeves more than I can say. By the way, she’s the jazz singer in Clooney’s Good Night and Good Luck, in case you didn’t know.
  18. Angel Eyes ~ Mel Torme & Cleo Laine
When I was little, I thought his nickname was The Velvet Frog and I thought it was mean. Turns out I had it wrong.
  19. Every Time We Say Goodbye ~ Ray Charles & Betty Carter
I love this version even more than her solo one. It’s heartbreakingly beautiful.

  1. I LOVE the John Prine and Iris Demet song. It was on a CD a friend made for me a while back.
Thanks for the others. You’re right about Beecharmer and The Simple Story.
