Life is good

Brett has a job on the horizon. He had a couple, actually, but after much angsting (on his part) and optimism (on my part), we decided that flexible hours are too important to accept anything else. At least if we want to put more earning responsibility on me, which we do. I feel like the more I work, the more we can live a family-centered life because it brings Brett into the picture more. Also, when I’m not cramming work into the very tiny cracks and crevices of my every day parenting, I’m a much nicer person and the kids appreciate that.

I’m stretching myself so much these days. I’m pushing the boundaries of my confidence and frankly, it’s terrifying but exciting, too. I’ve been telecommuting for so long and it turns out there’s a whole world of interesting people right in my own backyard. Who knew?

Yesterday Madison woke up and Brett was gone and she said, “Oh no, Daddy’s at work! He’s all alone!” I said, “No there are people who work with him; he’s not alone.” She said, “He has friends?” And I said, “Yup, he has friends at work.” And she said, with a satisfied air, “Then he can go get a hug if he’s feeling sad.”

So then I sat her down for a long lecture about sexual harassment laws complete with an educational video. These days, you can never start too young.*

* I feel I must add that I’m kidding because occasional commenters wander in and display a startling level of sarcasm-impairment. It’s very sad.

  1. Hooray for everything! Glad things are coming together for you and I think you’re right…you have a great opportunity here to build a good foundation for the future, so don’t accept anything less. It’s so much easier to set things up for success right from the beginning.

  2. i am so glad for you and your family.

i reluctantly have to admit, that altho i wdnt have been sarcastic in my comment, i stupidly thought you were serious.

i post infrequently on my blog and have received about half dozen responses. one of them was very rude and included an expletive. i cdnt decide how to respond or whether to leave it up or not.

    just wondering what you do.

  3. “Then he can go get a hug if he’s feeling sad.”

    THAT. IS. SO. DARN. CUTE.

  4. Oh, I truly hope things work out for your family (as they have for ours — my husband got a job offer last Thursday) and he gets a job. You’ll all feel so much better and relieved.

  5. Mazel tohv! I’m glad things are looking better.

I always have to think about what I write because I use sarcasm as humor a lot and it doesn’t translate as well to writing. That and I tend to write before bed so my brain is mushy anyhow.

  6. She’s so cute if she was any cuter you’d have to have bodyguards.

  7. We just went through a somewhat unexpected job search. Wishing you the best. Hang in there.

  8. how cute that she is worried about him being alone and sad. and i appreciate the saracasm, but you are right - if someone doesn’t know you well, they might think you are serious. also, as bacchus said, it doesnt always translate well into writing - in person, you can hear the expression more, so it is easier to get.

  9. ha! I’m cracking up at the idea of your sexual harassment workshop/training for the kids…
