Best Purim EVER

My god, you guys rock! I highly recommend remember the last post next time you have a birthday present to buy for a preschool-aged kid because the suggestions are FANTASTIC! And varied — surely something for any kid! I’m going to just send grandparents to read through the comments next time I talk to them; I’m sure they’ll find something they’ll really like giving and that Madison will like, too. Thank you!

We went to the megillah reading at our synagogue tonight and Jessica and Nate came, too. (Nate is her betrothed.) It’s a pretty fun intro to Judaism because it’s very silly and loud and they sing a Purim song to “Help, Help me Rhonda” and then there are cookies afterwards (hamantashan). My favorite part every year is when Noah’s old religious school teacher is playing the part of Mordechai and he says, “And that’s when I tore off my shirt and became…” (and here he pulls open his buttondown) “SUPER JEW!”

Then afterwards we went out to eat.

Four things worth noting:

  1. Brett and Nate wore the same shirt. It underscores the fact that they are in many ways the same man. It is, frankly, pretty bizarre.
  2. Madison said to Jessica, “Hey! I’m brown like you!” Which let me point out that she gets her brown skin from Jessica because she grew in Jessica’s uterus. “Hooray!” said Madison. Jessica laughed and said, “My mom will be so happy when I tell her this!”
  3. We got to introduce Jessica and Nate to our rabbi.
  4. Madison really took advantage of Jessica being her special parent. She wanted to hold her hand, she wanted to sit by her at dinner and she was happy to have Jessica take her to the potty. This is huge and fabulous and it does my heart good to see it.

Noah had a good time, too. He really loves Jessica and Nate.

(Just now Madison said, “Oh dammit, Diosius peed in her underwear.” Brett, bless him, does not cuss and he asked, “Who says that?” I thought he was trying to get me in trouble but then he went on and said, “It’s ok to pee in your underwear. Accidents happen.” He and Madison are dancing and they keep coming by the doorway doing funny walks and trying to get me laughing.)

  1. You’re just happy someone else took her to the potty!

(My five-year-old tried to take my two-year-old to the potty at the bookstore today. Got her all the way into the men’s room (small town, small store, no big deal) but then failed because she didn’t believe he could lift her onto the toilet. Good effort, though. Hope he still wants to take his baby brother when he’s ready.)

  2. It does MY heart good to read this post, from the Super Jew to Madison’s “hooray!” Love it.

  3. Thank you so much for this. From the other side, it’s really great to hear an adoptive parent say that those little things make them happy. What you described sounds so much like my visits with my daughter.

As an aside, my beau has the same first name as my daughter’s adoptive father. It’s funny.

  4. happy purim! my kids are having a blast too - from megillah and costumes, making hamantaschen and food gifts, to some time off from school - great holiday for kids.

  5. What a joyful post. :)

  6. Yes, this post is a great “cheer up” post! :)

  7. you and jessica are certainly lucky to have madison. but madison is blessed to have two wonderful mothers who put their child first. thank you for showing it can work, on so many levels.

  8. Makes me happy for Jessica that she isn’t shut out, happy for Madison too. And makes me happy for you that you get to bond with Jessica because you really share something quite profound.

I am not happy about adoption nor do I think it’s wonderful let’s all go tripping down the jolly adoption lane singing and wearing silly hats……(just to clarify)

I am happy that this situation works for you guys and that there is a lot of love and respect. That’s what I mean.
