Oh mamamarta! that is our awful carpet!!! The original owners were elderly and carpeted both the kitchen and the bathroom. We pulled up the carpeting in the bathroom but only the top layer in the kitchen. The original floor in the kitchen-proper was speckled linoleum and in the dining area was oak. They glued the carpet down straight onto the flooring so ruined it completely.
We’re going to put marmoleum in the kitchen proper (we’re learning towards something aqua-ish but aren’t sure, thus the continued carpet) and we’re going to refinish the dining area.
Other plans: the original formica on the counters isn’t as yellow as it looks in the picture, but it has badly yellowed and the gloss is long gone. We’d like to replace it with one of the retro formica counters, maybe the white with aqua boomerangs (if we do blue floor). Or else aqua with white boomerangs and a more neutral floor. We’re going to leave the banged up cabinetry because we like the knotty pine. Then the dining area is paneled so with refinished wood floors and knotty pine cabinets it may end up looking more rustic than we want but we’ll see and if it’s awful, we’ll reluctantly paint the paneling (it’s original paneling — we’re trying to restore and not just rehab). But we’re not making any color decisions ’til we get the wood floors done. The carpet, may I say, is disgusting. Especially with a dog and a Madison, neither of whom are neat.
i was hoping you were going to say it’s linoleum! i’m in the market for a new kitchen floor myself…. leaning hard to a wood floor, mostly because it hides dirt so well. but i also love color. our cabinets are originally white ikea, and we painted them a peachy orange, which i love. we definitely need new counters, and i like the idea of retro formica, but i’m thinking a really cool funky color — in which case i might also do some sort of funky color on the floor, most likely blue, which is why your floor caught my eye! do you have any links or brand names for the floors/counters you’re considering?
This is what we’re going to put in, too. It’s incredibly easy, too (on one home rehab web site a woman says she did it one evening despite being five months pregnant with twins!) so there’s no install cost. And it has this fabulous retro look but is environmentally sound (no outgassing!).
We watched that horrible Garfield movie because Noah adores it and Brett and I spent the whole time discussing Jon’s Arts and Crafts bungalow. He’s got real formica countertops (in red!) and marmoleum floor — we were so impressed!! The movie is awful but it’s worth watching to catch the kitchen in that house!
i’m definitely going to look at the marmoleum. how does your bil like it in terms of keeping it clean? my kitchen floor is my nemisis, and i really really need something that is ultra low-maintainance and doesn’t show dirt.
do you have any thoughts on retro counters?
you’re inspiring me! our kitchen rehab stalled out awhile ago due to lack of funds, but i might splurge and dip into savings soon.
Wick (BIL) says it’s very easy to keep clean with a dust mop and there is some cleaner they sell with it for more serious cleaning. Because it has cork underneath, you can’t let water stand on it or it’ll warp. At first we were concerned about this because when Madison does dishes, she ends up swamping the place but the dealership said it’s not as huge a deal as it sounds and is no different than laminate that way. (We’ve heard about installs in bathrooms, too, so it must be ok and we’re thinking about it for one of the bathrooms.) This is where I got the most info outside of my BIL: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&hs=1V9&q=+site:ths.gardenweb.com+gardenweb+marmoleum+click
"The idea of precision, though, is sort of interesting. On the one hand I want the language to be right. On the other hand I don't want to grab my reader by the back of the neck and say, 'See, this is what I mean.' Although there are moments when I regret that I didn't, when you see wild misinterpretations or careless readings of something you hoped had been written carefully. But I'd rather take that risk. I'd rather hope the spell of the language is somehow sufficient."
Awwww…. too cute!!
micah opens two lower cabinet doors wide, and then pulls out the drawers above them to make a roof, and hangs out in there a lot.
do you have a blue kitchen floor? what is it made of?
Very cute.
Liam climbs into our pantry and calls it his office - or sometimes it’s a lift
The cuteness! You should have a warning label on these posts! argh the cuteness!!!
Our corner cupboard is one of Jamie’s favorite places too!

This is the formica we’re thinking of (and I’m seeing that they don’t have the aqua on white that I thought!) — you do it with the metal band and everything!
