Baby/Big Girl
Nov 2, 2006 Parenting
Madison is so two-and-a-half. Unlike Noah, who became a terrible, terrible small person at this age, she’s still her sprightly, cheerful self but she’s also absolutely insane.
“I’m a baby! A teensy-tiny baby! Your sweet baby is here!” she’ll beseech, pulling on my shirt. Then, “I’m a big girl! Let me do it myself! I don’t want help!”
I’m game. I’ll cuddle her and rock her then let her pick out her own mis-matched clothes. Whatever.
She hasn’t wanted to be with the babysitter the last two visits and so I told her I’d leave the door open to the room where I’m working and let her come in and see me. She’s spent most of the time lying on the bed and staring at me adoringly but she hasn’t bugged me so I’ve let it be. I don’t want to have this separation-anxiety fight right before I go to Boston. But it’s pretty bad. Today she told me I was not allowed to go potty without informing her and leaving the door open in case she wants to join me.
“No privacy!” she told me. “I miss you and then I cry!”
She’s also acting it out with her babies a lot. They miss her, she comes back, they cry, she leaves them again. “My sweet baby,” she murmurs. “You are sad because you miss mommy.”
Then she orders me to care for them so she can go away. It’s all such typical 2 1/2 year oldness. She needs so much matter-of-fact reassurances because she’s getting so big so quickly.

Baby Book Entry
Nov 2, 2006 Parenting
Today in the bathtub Madison was sliding around with her baby bath doll and she said, “I’m brown!” then she said, “Baby’s brown!”
That’s all. No commentary. Just wanted to get it down and dated.

Updates and Recipes
First, update on Get Them Blogging!. We now have almost 200 bloggers in the database, which is great but I’ve gotten the tech stuff worked out to where I’m ready to add more More MORE! To do this week:
- Create blogads for those of you nice enough to offer me some ad space;
- Write pitch letter and (gulp) start sending it out to bloggers outside my sphere;
- Advertise on Craig’s list;
- Pass out some of the business cards I got to solicit blogs.
And recipes!
Peanut Butter Mousse Cake — It was easy (although it took a lot of mixing bowls) and pretty damn good. I used the Omega-3 peanut butter because I just couldn’t stand feeding anyone the hydrogenated oils in the regular stuff and it doesn’t work with natural peanutbutter. Next time I’d use a milk chocolate topping to make it more like a Reese’s cup.
Focaccia Bread — I make this in the bread machine then dump it out (it’s very sticky) and coat my hands with olive oil to shape it. It ALWAYS turns out and people ALWAYS comment about how good it is. Usually guests will outright ask for left-overs. I use it for sandwiches (last night we had turkey, provolone, artichokes and tomatoes covered with a really good Italian dressing and broiled open-faced ’til the cheese was bubbly) so shape it to be fat enough to cut open.

How many…?
Nov 1, 2006 Family
Question: How many adults does it take to accompany a 9-year old boy and a 2-year old girl trick-or-treating?
Answer: Six. Brett, my dad, Brett’s dad, Brett’s mom, Jessica and Nate. The children were accompanied by quite a crowd — a very cheerful crowd. They came back and ate sandwiches (I’ve got this great recipe for focaccia) and the peanut butter mousse cake (turned out pretty good). Then the grandparents drifted away — my dad took Noah with him to head over to my sister’s. Nate and Jessica hung out for awhile longer. It was a nice Halloween. Hopefully it bodes well for a great holiday season this year.
