Mom meme

1. How long have you been a Mom?
Going on a decade this upcoming January.

2. How many children call you Mommy/Mom/Mama?
Two — both call me Mommy and Madison also calls me “mama” and “mudder.” Noah refers to me as “my mom” when speaking of me but Mommy to my face.

3. Girl? Boy? Both?
One of each.

4. Did you know what you were having?
Nope. Our doctor didn’t do routine ultrasounds with Noah so we got to be surprised. With Madison, Jessica knew what she was having and shared that with us at the restaurant when we first met.

5. How old were you when you became a Mom?:
27.

6. How long were you in labor?
I went into labor with Noah on Sunday (not sure of the time — we called our doula late Sunday night and she looked at Brett’s loose charting and said it looked like I’d been laboring for awhile) and he was born at 5:15am on Tuesday. It was long, it was hard, and he had shoulder dystocia and had to have his collar broken and his birth was assisted (vacuum extractor). His first apgar was either a 4 or a 5 — I can’t remember but he was limp and blue and the doctors were worried. His second apgar was a 9.

With Madison, I was obviously not in labor. But she was a c-section baby for low amniotic fluid and her first apgars were 9 and 9.

Both kids came a little less than a week early.

7. What’s your favorite thing about being a mom?
Getting to know my kidlets.

8. What’s your least favorite thing?
Never having any time to myself.

9. Do you want more kids?
No. Sometimes I wish I did want more kids because theoretically it sounds fun but realistically, two is plenty (and “only” one wasn’t as bad as I originally thought).

10. Do you plan on having more soon?
I plan on NOT having more soon.

11. Does daddy change diapers?
Yes, absolutely.

12. How many times have you been peed on?
Who counts these things?

13. Barfed on?
Again, one does not count these things.

14. Is your child named after anyone?
We found Noah’s name on Brett’s family tree and his middle name is my mom’s last name. Madison middle name is Jessica’s brother’s name.

15. How did you come up with their name(s)?
Noah: Spent a lot of time going over Brett’s family bible (my family doesn’t have a bible) and trying on old fashioned names we liked. I was rooting for Asher (my grandfather’s Hebrew name) but for a reason obvious to people who actually know us in real life, that wouldn’t work (it’s his Hebrew name now). We chose Noah because it sounded like a gentle man’s name and because all the Noahs I knew back then were Jewish. (Little did I know that it would surge to popularity the way it has.) Originally he was going to have my last name as his middle name but then I figured I didn’t really care about passing my last name on but really wanted to honor my mom so he got her last name as a middle name, much to her joy.

Madison: Jessica had another name picked out but her friends voted her down. She found Madison on the top 10 baby name list and yet last I heard it wasn’t as popular for girls as Noah is for boys. (sigh) And like I said, her middle name is Jessica’s brother’s name — also her father’s but she is named specifically for Jessica’s beloved brother.

16. When your child gets in trouble, who is the bad guy?
Mostly me because I’m around more.

17. And who is the good guy?
Depends on who’s doing the yelling.

18. What is the longest you have been away from your children?
As you all know, I recently went to Boston and was gone from Thursday afternoon to Sunday night. Before that the longest was when I left Noah (he was five) for three days for a business trip to Utah.

19. Bedtime routine?
Jammies for all, brush teeth, Noah reads with Daddy in the big bed while I rock with Madison. If she’s not asleep by the time Daddy gets out, she usually wants him to finish rocking.

20. Are your toes painted?
Not sure why this is in a mom meme but yes, my big toes are painted for a mom reason (I painted them because Madison wanted hers painted and then wanted us to match).

21. Last movie you saw in the theatre?
Inside Man.

22. Last time you had a date?
I’m having one today. But I think we’re going to talk about the budget and it won’t be any fun whatsoever.

23. One thing you will not give up just because you’re a mom?
Writing.

24. One thing you did give up now that you’re a mom?
Sleep.

25. Best mom perk?
Besides the kids? See #26.

26. Snack you sneak bites from your child?
None. But I do swipe Halloween candy.

27. When the kid is napping, you are?
Typing, usually. Cleaning, occasionally.

28. Where is your child now?
Noah is downstairs on Neopets and Madison is in her room managing her hoarde of imaginary children.

29. Favorite place to buy maternity clothes?
I do believe I bought my clothes at J. C. Penny. This was before all the cool kids had cool maternity clothes.

30. If I could do it over, I’d do this differently:
Marry rich. (I kid, Brett! I kid!)

31. What is the craziest thing you have said/done/taught since becoming a mom?
“Noah, we do not put crackers in our tushies!” (and last week I caught myself saying the exact same thing to Madison.)

  3. awww… i also gave jonathan my brother’s name as his middle name.

  4. If you check here, Madison was No. 3 for girls for 2005, while Noah didn’t make the top 10 for boys(no. 23).

I named my daughter something so unusual that I’m sure she is the only one in the Us with that name - something from German mythology. I’m waiting to see if she’ll hate me for it .. :)

  5. PS: I think the name Noah is beautiful. Unfortunately my husband isn’t a fan of biblical names, so it’s out even if I do get a boy, but I enjoy hearing it in (on??) others.
