Vertigo

I had vertigo at the conference, which I blamed on the flight and the elevators (I was on the 23rd floor). I would step off into a dim hallway then walk to a bright foyer and get dizzy. The weird, tangled carpet pattern didn’t help.

It got worse last night and I felt tipsy, like I was staggering around the house. My mom said it was probably an inner-ear thing (”You’ve got lousy ears,” she said) and that if it didn’t clear up I should call the doctor.

It seems better today — it’s recessed enough that I can tell the dizziness is all in my head — but last night I woke up because my dreams were flipping like the broken vertical hold on an old television set. I turned on my reading light and started at Madison’s piggy bank next to the bed to prove to myself that the room wasn’t moving even while my stomach somersaulted over and over again. That scared me — I’ve read too many Oliver Sacks books. But like I said, it seems to be much better today.

Also wanted to say that this is a pretty impressive brush with celebrity!!!

I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to get over the guilt of Jessica signing the surrenders at 72 hours. But I try to use that guilt as a force of good and not for evil (making me feel humbled instead of entitled).

  1. I get vertigo frequently when I fly. I am prone to it anyway. When I have seen a doctor, they do say it’s an ear thing. Once they gave me antibiotics, in case I had an ear infection. Last year I had it for 6 weeks. I am not kidding.

So you have my sympathy. Don’t bend over or get up too quickly.

  2. Drink lots of water and stuff to keep the fluids in your head fluid. Try aspirin to shrink membranes and such. I’ve had it and it’s no dang fun. Hopefully it will go away.

  3. Is it that thing where those little rocks inside your ear are floating around? If so, all you have to do is a weird head rotation thing and it will fix it right up.

Of course, since I don’t know the name of the rock ear thing, I can’t google the excercises for you.

  4. Antivert.
    Works wonders.
