“There are many days … when I wish they’d have more aspects of Jewish and Asian culture. I wish they’d get up earlier in the morning, I wish they would work harder and in many respects that’s what we do see out of many of the Asian and the Jewish culture. My kids are all Anglo, they’re Irish, English and they’re wonderful kids and I wish they’d work a little harder sometimes. Sometimes, I wish that I had some more of those traits.
What prompted this celebration of model minorities? According to the Denver Post it was, “Ex-Gov. Dick Lamm’s lament that Latinos and African-Americans don’t have the ‘Jewish or Japanese love of learning and upward mobility’.”
Yeah, damn me and my inferior lazy culture! I keep trying to train M’s Asian half to show the proper filial piety and clean the house for me, but the white half keeps getting in the way and making her all lazy.
My Dad claimed (tongue in cheek) that being Episcopal gave him bladder control. He converted when he was 60, and that night was the first night in years he didn’t have to get up and go the bathroom during the night. So those of you struggling with potty training might want to consider that.

I’m sorry, but people are people and I’m pretty sure you’ll find all types no matter what culture you’re in. Along with Thirdmom: “Good grief!”
i think that whenever any group keeps procreating there are going to be qualities that will dominate and appear more often than others. this doesnt mean that every one in that group will have that quality. and it doesnt mean that we shouldnt treat each person individually.
in this particular case, since the traits mentioned are considered positive traits, i will say that thank goodness. cause i think jewish people need these traits in order to survive.
I’m reading Beverly Tatum’s book, Why are all the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria, right now. It’s hard to be reminded how damaging even these “positive” stereotypes are. The thing that hit me was when she talked about how her students were bothered by the angry writings of Asian authors, but not those of African American authors. Bill Owens is doing a great job adding to the “model minority” idea. I guess if we just keep telling asians how smart they are, and jews how hard working they are, they won’t care about racism. Right? Ahhh.
Well I’m Jewish and I’m still a slacker. I guess being a Reform Jew must have diluted my work ethic or something.
