Mix Tape: Strength (3 of 6)
And back to your regularly scheduled mix tape!
#8 Open Your Eyes You Can Fly — Flora Purim
This song works so well with the songs before it — and lemme tell you trying to get out of the rap groove towards the folk-singer vibe coming later was a challenge. (I’ll throw out here that my mom has never liked my mix tapes because they are schizophrenic but it’s a point of pride that they are — to me — eclectic. To each her own, I say.) Anyway, this is jazz at its most jubilant (due in part, I understand, to Ms. Purim’s release from prison just before the recording).

#9 Super Clever — Kinnie Starr
Madison and I enjoy jamming to this tune because we, I tell her, are both Super Clever. (Noah is Super Clever, too, but he was in his room reading when we were dancing the other day.) Go get your grrlfriends and bop around enjoying your Super Cleverness!

#10 People Have the Power — Patti Smith
Patti Smith wants you — yes you! — to take over the world for good not evil! Of course she was using this song to campaign for Ralph Nader, the man who I believe helped lose the election but that, my friends, is a matter of opinion and my brother (greenie that he is) would roll his eyes at me. It’s a good song anyway and Madison and I enjoy leaping around to this one, too.
