Mix Tape: Comfort (4 of 6)
You know why I’m going to miss Paige when she moves? Is it her fabulous cooking? Her ease with all kids? Her expertise and generosity? Well, yes, but most of all, it’s because she’s the only one of my friends who would be willing — nay, eager! — to go see Michael Feinstein with me. We’re going tonight! Hooray! Back to the mix tape (Michael makes an appearance on tomorrow’s line up)!
#10 Storms Never Last — Allison Moorer
Ms. Moorer subtitles this “Tribute to Waylon” (he sang it first) but in my long history of defaulting to female singers, hers is the version I have on iTunes.
#11 Green (It’s Not Easy Being) — Shirley Horn
I adore her version of this song but then I adore Shirley Horn. I’m sorry this song comes through so quiet — it’s been the bane of my mix tape existence for some years — but some mp3 players will let you boost the volume when you go to burn the CD. It’s just too good to leave out even if you have to turn it up then turn it back down before the next song starts. Listen to it the next time you’re feeling alone and misunderstood. I guarantee it’ll have you sniffling by the end.

#12 No One Is Alone — Bernadette Peters
As if you’d get out of any mix tape of mine without a show tune! (Actually I’m not sure if the next two have them or not but this one has a couple.) Ms. Peters originated the role of the Witch in the original production but here she delivers on the song sung by Cinderella and the Baker at the end of the show. It’s a beautiful song and there are many gorgeous versions — I like this one because I think she’s a fabulous actor, which is what really makes the beswt of Broadway so much more than people with big voices singing big songs. This song always makes me think about how most of us are just doing the best we can with what we’ve got. It’s a good song to listen to when you’re thinking about letting go of old resentments.
