Got no writing done so far this weekend. I did a bunch of digging around for studies on Saturday but haven’t had a chance to sit down with them and take notes. Instead I’ve been reading Julia Glass’s second book, The Whole World Over, (which I just saw was originally titled A Piece of Cake). It’s not as good as Three Junes but I’m relieved to say it’s certainly not bad either. I mean, her first book wasn’t a fluke, happily. Fenno shows up in this one again and I have mixed feelings about that. Seeing as how I have a literary crush on Fenno, I can understand if his creator does, too, but I’m finding him distracting. I want to say to the other characters — the one who are the point of this book — “Please get out of the way so I can see Fenno some more.”
I think having cameos from previous books is an indulgence author’s ought to deny themselves. I’ve thought this since Ponyboy showed up in That Was Then, This is Now. But maybe she’s planning to do a Tales of the City thing? I guess I’ll have to wait for her third book to see.
