An experiment

I’m going to try getting up before the kids. I know, I know, it’s an ambitious goal but I say you gotta dream big.

I need my alone time — I go crazy without my alone time — so I stay up until midnight then read in bed until my eyes won’t stay open, which has me dragging in the morning. I’m going to try to switch out my awake time and go for waking up earlier and going to bed earlier. It’s crazy but it’s so crazy that it just. might. work.

I’ve been thinking about how I need to do this for awhile now but if I want to have a crack at this proposal, I need to look to the morning hours when my brain actually functions. Past 10pm I’m a shadow of my quick-thinking (relatively speaking) self. Just think — if I get up at 6am-ish I could not only have a cup of coffee before the children get out of bed but I could even shower every single day if I wanted to! And not shower at night only to suffer the ill-effects of sleeping on wet hair (bed head to the nth degree). I could be both showered and caffeinated! I could maybe even (dare I say it?) be dressed before ten in the morning EVERY SINGLE DAY!

I told you, I’m dreaming big. The sky’s the limit! There’s gonna be some changes made!!!

That is if I can resist the snooze alarm. I’ll let you know tomorrow.

  1. 6 AM, you say? now THAT is dedication.

(says I who am very happy that my boys get on the bus at 8:10…I can stay in bed til 7:40 and still get them out the door on time.)

  2. I’ve been trying to do the same thing these days. And I’ve got to tell ya, I’m exhausted. Oh, my god. I’m so not a morning person. But I do get stuff done, so that’s a good thing. Good luck with that snooze button.

  3. That is one of the biggest drawbacks of having a teenager, no alone time. I do get up at 6 and so do Mason and Aubree. Last year Linley and Mason were in bed by 8, with Mallory and Aubree by 9. So I got an hour or two of alone time. Now this great big girl’s (Mallory) body clock won’t let her sleep much before 10:30 or 11. So she stays up and does homework or watches tv, so I get no alone time. Frankly telling her to go to bed seems inhospitable. Plus I know she will be gone too soon. Still I am so rarely alone that a shower seems a treat.

  4. good luck getting up early, it is amazing what one can get done when one is awake, i usually go to bed really late, and am very tired the whole day, when i went to bed early wow it was really good, so good luck, i’m delurking here i really like your blog!

  5. I keep thinking I should do the same but I never get around to it! I’m lucky to have a little boy who will play in his room until I’m ready for him, and also we’re starting potty training so I go in and put him on the potty and then go get dressed before taking him off, it’s working well at the moment!

Hope tomorrow you have more luck!

  6. My life has changed for the better since I started getting up an hour earlier than my kids. Everything you said — quiet, coffee, shower…it all awaits! The trick is beaking the habit of going to bed late…

    Good luck!
