Yesterday/Today
Dec 6, 2005 The Story of My Life
Yesterday I woke up and showered right away. And got dressed. And then I came out and Noah had fixed breakfast! (Two slices of toast for each of us, already buttered.) So I had coffee with breakfast for the first time in ages.
Today none of that happened. Fortunately yesterday left such a lovely rosy glow that facing my usual routine didn’t matter so much.
My usual routine is: Wake up because Madison is leaning on me and saying, “Diaper change, please!” (Only it sounds like, “Dipah cheeps, teese!” Notice that Madison is a little late on her alert because the bed (and now my back) are soaked. Change Madison, change self after digging through clean but not yet folded and put away laundry and spend quite some time finding matching socks. Scuffle into the kitchen while brushing my teeth and stopping along the way to open blinds. Gaze morosely at the kitchen, which needs to be cleaned (this isn’t every morning because usually Brett cleans it after dinner but last night he took his mom out). Sigh. Get breakfast for Madison (cheerios stirred into yogurt, toast, banana, etc. — Madison likes a buffet for breakfast). Offer breakfast to a drowsy, scowling Noah who wanders in with the dog and slouches into his chair. Offer breakfast to Noah again. Tell him he has to eat something. Tell him no — he can’t have the chocolate in his advent calendar until after he eats something. Hand him a banana and meet his glare with my own patented grouchy mother glare. Clean Madison. Clean high chair. Clean table in front of Madison. Look longingly at cold coffee pot. Change Madison’s clothes. Come out and drink a glass of water while clearing off counter. Eat left-overs of Madison’s breakfast while contemplating the day. Consider whether or not to shower. (Questions to ask: How dirty am I? When did I last shower? How much baby pee soaked through my shirt? Who is coming over today? Where do I need to go? Am I scuzzy enough to make it worth nagging Noah to watch Madison? Is Madison amenable to being watched?) Start the coffee pot with either hopeful optimism or dour pessimism depending on the schedule.

oh you haven’t braced yourself yet for cold coffee? I’ll take any coffee I can get…my favorite trick is to simply heat up yesterday’s left over coffee int he microwave…my dh says there’s a lot of “acid” in it–(huh?) but do I care? Is it still caffeine? No, and yes, respectively.

wow, you must be making a lot of money off that patent!
is the rest of the day pretty much different every day? i’d be interested to hear more about “a typical homeschooling day” (unless you posted about that already, and then you can tell me to go search the archives)
thanks
