The kitchen picture post

This is the view standing by Noah’s place at the table so you can see the paneling in the eating area and get an idea of how that part connects to the kitchen itself. Also you can see the scroll work in front of the fluorescent lighting. Apparently that’s a common 50s touch. Also, that first counter with the chalkboard hung under it is the theoretical breakfast bar but you can see it’s a tight squeeze.

This was taken actually inside the kitchen area. You can see the built-in stove top there. The white things on the cabinets are baby-proofing devices. That lower corner cabinet has a lazy susan. (You can see our garage out the back. My friend came over today and said the garage lay-out is also very 50s but I didn’t ask her how exactly. I mean, how 50s can a garage lay-out be? Maybe she meant the patio.)

Here is the view from other corner on the same side (from the dishwasher). That lower corner cabinet also has a lazy susan. That three-tiered thing hanging off the left side of the oven is a foil/wax paper dispenser. It’s pretty beat up but useful.

From the next corner (I just went around the kitchen so you can see the lay-out). Madison is newly awakened and asking for a banana. (Please note the blue carpet in the background — it’s brighter than it appears here.)

And then the last corner. The counter on the left there is the theoretical breakfast bar again so you can orient yourself.

Finally, the instruction booklet for the stove/oven. Nifty, eh?

  1. It *is* a great kitchen!! The ovens are very impressive! I love the cabinets, the wood is really beautiful. More beautiful than anything, though, is Madison. She is one gorgeous “baby”!

  2. I like it - that’s a great kitchen.

  3. What does that bottom door on the stove do? Is it a warmer or does it also cook things? It is very interesting to see how our kitchen my have originally started out before it was bastardized 10 times over. It looks totally different than I had imagined. I like it!

  4. Those pics are super. Gotta agree though - the best is w/Madison looking so adorable from her nap. It looks to be a warm and inviting kitchen, love the wood color. You could always put a tall bar type stool at the very end of the nooky area, so Noah (or whomever) could just hang out there while you or B. are busy there…
Or for you or B. to drink tea or coffee, spread out the paper :-)
I think it really rare to find such original parts to a 50’s/60’s home. Were the previous owners, the first and original? I can’t recall. Just wow, and thanks for squeezing our lust for a view of/from your kitchen into your busy schedule!

  5. Wow–your kitchen is a lot like my kitchen!–the paneling and cabinets, the cornice, the foil and wax paper dispenser (ours is in the wall behind a hinged door). We also have, complete with 50s instructions, a motor mounted under the countertop with blender, mixer and knife grinder attachments. Doesn’t work though.

  6. I LOVE your kitchen. The knotty pine is beautiful. I am envious of all your space — I cook in a broom closet.

  7. What a great room.
I would have bought the house based on that alone!

  8. such a great kitchen!

  9. Heh. So, apparently EVERY HOUSE IN AMERICA that was built in the 1950s has these exact same knotty pine cabinets with the scrollwork and those hammered metal barn-type hinges. I thought it was only in my neighborhood.

Oh, and we have a counter-top stove also. It was electric, but I hate cooking on electric, so we changed that out. Our original 1950s (I think) GE electric wall oven is still there, though. I’m just not ready to spend the bucks to change that one out yet.

Your kitchen reminds me of mine, and I love my kitchen, too. Enjoy it.

  10. Beautiful kitchen. And it definately meets my top criterea–enough counter space for two people to work without bumping into each others, and enough storage space for two sets of pots/pans/dishes/knives (we keep kosher)–and you’ve even got a two chambered metal sink! So good for kashrut!

  11. looks great. glad you are discovering so many things about the new house you enjoy!

  12. Those stoves! I’m jealous. The set-up reminds me of my Nana’s kitchen. She did a lot of entertaining and made lots of huge family meals.

  13. It looks lovely, Dawn. It makes me homesick for my grandparents’ kitchen in their old house. Their cabinets were that orangey wood without the knots that yours have but they had the stove top and the wall oven and the short bar. I’m having a moment here remembering their house…. My family lived there for 3 years when I was a teenager and then when I started helping care for my grandmother 4 years ago they still lived there. My grandpa is having lots of crazy moving adventures with his new wife (grandma died almost 2 years ago) and I’m not sure where he lives right now!

  14. looks great and I love what I can see of the back yard too! You totally scored. Are you gonna keep the blue carpet?

  15. Adorable kitchen! Even though we just finished a remodel that I love, I wouldn’t touch that kitchen (as long as the appliances work well). Totally cool.
