Avoiding work
May 24, 2003 Parenting
I have so much work to do but I’m finding all sorts of busy little things to do instead. Things such as making a blog entry when I have absolutely nothing to say.
Noah had t-ball practice today. It’s a co-ed league but there aren’t any girls on his team. It’s always interesting when I see other boys Noah’s age because he has these mannerisms that I think are part of his personality but are really about being a 6-year old boy. For example, many boys his age greet each other by making a face and falling down. Or making a face and hitting themselves in the head and then falling down. I don’t know why. He can’t explain why. They just do it. His female friends don’t seem to do this as much. They’re silly, too, but not as prone to pratfalls. He and Alex, on the other hand, can spend hours randomly dropping to the ground in heaps. All the boys on the t-ball team were doing this, too, especially towards the end of practice when they were getting bored.

See this man? I love him. I love him ever since I saw him do his thing on the Rosie O’Donnel show. I have rented the Spice Girls movie just to see him trot around in it.

Now that little headshot of Alan Cumming is not one you’ll see any old place. It’s an exclusive to this lowly little blog. How did I get it, you ask? I got it in an email, which you will see below. Read the rest of this entry »

A story that features pants
May 22, 2003 The Story of My Life
When I was in 9th grade I was in love with Ron Glick. In 8th grade I had loved Scott Cordial and then Chris Pezzano but this was nothing to how much I loved Ron Glick.
The 9th graders had their own building that year because the school district was juggling student bodies trying to make an over-crowded system work without raising taxes. It was nice to be by ourselves for the first year of high school, especially for me because I was a year younger than my classmates (I skipped 4th grade) and I was, ahem, a late bloomer (I had no boobies). Michelle Creighton used to stroll down the hall in really tight Calvin Kleins singing that song by Billy Squier, “Everybody wants me!” and I would look at her shaking her little butt and just hate myself. And her.
I loved Ron Glick for two reasons: 1) I figured he was a little bit funny-looking and so maybe he would love me back because probably he wasn’t in huge demand (kind of like loving Roger the drummer in Duran Duran instead of wasting my time pining after Nick or John), and 2) when I sat behind him in math class and noticed the way his broad shoulders stretched his pin-striped oxford shirt, well, my tummy started doing flip-flops.
One day my big sister, Erica, came home and said that she had seen Ron Glick outside the high school in a car with a bunch of friends and that she had talked to him! And he had told her that he was going to say hi to me the very next day! Read the rest of this entry »

Spending money like I have it
May 21, 2003 Writing
I finally decided to spring for a fax machine. I’d been relying on this extremely buggy fax software, which allows me to fax from my computer but I can’t really receive faxes. Well, technically I should be able to but the nightmare that is this software doesn’t make any little thing easy. So I went and ordered a nice, simple, plain paper fax machine and some inkjet refill bottles because my printer is really limping along.
I have a lot of query ideas but querying is always hard for me. I have good clips now but it’s when my insecurity rears it’s ugly head (and that, my friends, is why I began the insecure writers support group). I get stage-fright when it comes to queries. Occasionally I get on a kick and send out a bunch but I’ve got to learn to force myself to do it at least once a week.
