Snakehaired Girl!
Apr 9, 2003 Blogging
Her birth stor is up! Actually it’s been up but I am just now linking to it.
I can’t believe I did it. When I look back on the experience, I’m amazed and terrified. There’s no way to describe the pain of labor. There’s no way to describe the pain of delivery. Luckily, pain is lost in memory although I seem to suffer some sort of post-traumatic stress when I try to recall the delivery. It was fast and furious, not the gentle opening of a flower or the riding of a wave that crashes down easily on some beach. It was loud. It was painful. And it was intense.

Fillyjonk Love
Apr 9, 2003 Read/heard/seen
Fillyjonk and I “met” as fans of the Moomintroll books (I saw her blog linked on Lynn’s site and had to check it out) and now she reminds me of another somewhat obscure kid’s book No Flying in the House. My sister and I adored this book when we were little but our copy belonged to a friend. When I finally scored a couple of copies a few years back we re-read it anxiously — sometimes kid’s books you remember with fondness don’t live up to your memories. This one really does. I read it to Noah when he was about three and he loved it, too. Wait, he’s here, I’ll ask him. He says, “I liked it. I don’t remember it but I remember that I liked it.”
A sterling recommendation, eh? Trust me (and Fillyjonk!), your kid will like it, too.

Phone interviews
Apr 9, 2003 Writing
Holly and I appear to be in the same boat today. I just finished one interview and have fifteen minutes before the next one. I dread these — absolutely dread them — but haven’t had a bad one yet. Instead of finding comfort in that, I’m always sure that the next one will be awful. The ones I’m doing today are with the two authors of the AAP policy paper on cord blood banking (for the record, they recommend against private banking) and then I need to schedule a time to talk to the head of a private bank and a public bank (where donated cord blood is stored). I was going to talk to a couple of parents who chose different routes but I don’t think I’m going to have space to do so.

Netscape
Apr 9, 2003 Uncategorized
I just looked at my blog in Netscape for Mac and it is seriously f*cked. I’m not even going to attempt to fix it because I don’t have the time and I don’t think I could even if I had the time.
Hmmm, I’m looking at all y’all’s blogs, too, and 87% of them are also f*cked so it looks like it’s Netscape’s problem.

Small books
Apr 8, 2003 Read/heard/seen
I just finished a kid’s book titled Return of the Twelve (and now that I see how much it’s worth, I’m thinking maybe I shouldn’t have read it in the bathtub). It’s about a set of wooden soldiers once owned by Branwell Bronte and his sisters. The soldiers are alive and the little boy who finds them watches over them as one of their Genii (plural for genius). It’s a lovely little book and it’s nice to see a story that would appeal to boys about very small things. Read the rest of this entry »
