On his 14th birthday, boy weds 42-year-old
PRAIRIEVILLE, La. — Lauren Roberts was riding in a car with her aunt, Daina Sancho, to Blockbuster one day last summer when Sancho said, “Lauren, I have something to tell you. I’m in love with I.V.”Daina was a 41-year-old mother of two. I.V., the nickname for Irwin Vincent O’Rourke III, was only 13 years old. It was a good thing, Roberts said, that she wasn’t driving, because the news came as a shock.

If IV were a girl, everyone would be screaming sex abuse.

I agree with Lynn. This is just a (twisted) example of the ‘old double standard’, in a sense–a *woman* couldn’t possibly be a predator, could she? What I thought was interesting was that the neighbor thought Daina was just “looking after” I.V. Such an assumption would probably not have been made of a man living with a young girl who was not his daughter, would it?
On the other hand, women have often been treated more harshly by the law than men when it comes to such ‘impropriety’, for acting outside the realm of ‘normal’ thanks again to the old double standard. I was reading about one such case in the local paper this morning (a female teacher involved with a student lost everything; a male colleague did not). At any rate, uuggghhh! Terribly, terribly sad, in my opinion. I.V. has been utterly let down by the very adults who are supposed to be looking out for him.

What were they thinking letting these two marry? Society has a lot to answer for.
