Locked out
Apr 10, 2003 The Story of My Life
I got locked out today. I spent the morning with my sister and then Noah went to her neighbor’s house to play. I said I was going to run home and check my mail (I’m waiting on something) and my email (of course) and maybe do a little work.
So I came home and there wasn’t anything in the mail, nothing useful in my email and my head hurt so I didn’t feel up to work. I put the dog on her leash, grabbed Noah’s pokemon cards (per his request) and stepped outside carefully locking the door behind me neglecting entirely to grab my keys from their place by the door.
It was about 3:15pm and Brett gets off work at 5pm.
I used my last $.50 hidden in the car to call my sister from the payphone a block away to ask her to go across the street and let her neighbor know that I’d be late (Noah, I’m sure was thrilled to hear it because he likes the neighbor’s house better than ours). Then came back to sit in the backyard and mope.
Grouch grouch grouch. I scowled at the grass, glared at the blue sky, sneered at the spring breeze. What a waste of an afternoon, I said to myself, sitting outside on a fresh April day when I could be working working working.
Duh.
At some point, my meager little brain realized that a forced vacation — even for a couple of hours — is a gift indeed. I went and poked at all the little seedlings, the clematis coming back, and the burgeoning daylilies. I played fetch with Peanut (good thing I’d thought to take her along). I lay on my beck on the deck and tried not to think of anything.
Brett came home at about 5:30pm and I’m happy to report that I am, like the cap seller in the kid’s picture book, “refreshed and rested.”
Of course I still have a lot of work to do. Tick tock!

What a smart woman you are! Realizing that the gods gave you a mini-vacation. SOunds like you’re having a nice weather day, same as we are here.
