Noah is an introvert and has never wanted to spend a ton of time with friends. Well, I should say never used to want to spend a ton of time with friends. This has all changed in the past month. Last week he wanted to see a friend every single day so he did. This week, it’s been more of the same. This is our current life: Read the rest of this entry »

Hestia unleashed
Mar 25, 2003 Uncategorized
I loathe violence. I have learned to channel my rage (which churned through me in my twenties as a result of a childhood of passive resistance, yadayadayada). I don’t want war, I don’t like war. And you know, I think people serving in our armed forces don’t want war. They understand, though, what we “peaceful idealists” fail to, and that is: as much as we want a world in which everyone is nicey-nice, it has NEVER BEEN THUS and WILL NEVER BE. It. just. won’t. happen. The talks didn’t work. The inspections were attempted more than once in the past 12 years. Our government listened to the protests around the world and decided to take military action anyway. That’s hubris. It’s also dedication. It’s about oil. It’s also about freedom for people. So wake up and put your energy to supporting the release of oppressed people, instead of ranting about how evil our government is.
Here’s the thing that I keep thinking: If evil intentions (corporate greed) make good things happen, does that change the evil intent?
I’m wringing my hands; I don’t know what to do. I know we’re not blameless liberators — holy heads held high and all that — but what if our military action does end up doing some good?
I’m praying it will. I know that there are a zillion ugly reasons why we’re over there but I pray it does some good.

Therein lies the rub
Mar 25, 2003 Read/heard/seen
The Hestia Chronicles offers a list of torture used in Iraq. She ends the partial list with this:
The report is grim reading. The cynical might ask why it’s taken so long for the world to intervene and assert that it’s only because it’s politically (or economically) expedient that the U.S. is acting now. Amnesty International has toiled for years to bring these abuses to light. As someone who has been reluctant to support military action in Iraq, this information gives me pause.
I have such conflicted feelings about the war. Will it be like WWII when we look back? Will our children be demanding to know why we didn’t go in sooner? Read the rest of this entry »

Good news for today
Mar 24, 2003 Uncategorized
Because I realized yesterday that cynicism is not a virtue, I’m going to post good stuff, dammit, stuff to make you feel like it’s ok to be alive even in a world where atrocities are everyday.
Here is today’s good news link.
And thanks to Elizabeth Skipper who made my whole goddamn day by linking to this story and for having “The Lanyard” posted on her site (see next entry).
Man, I needed that!
