What we did yesterday
The art museum is having a show of Aminah Robinson’s art work. It’s really beautiful. They had all of these activities going on there yesterday for family day. They had cloth paintings, storytelling (with our favorite storyteller, Lynn Ford), lots of music and other art activities. My personal favorite was the The American Jazz Experience presentation.
Noah and I get overwhelmed pretty quickly and he thought it was more fun in hindsight. I ended up with a headache and so next time I think we’ll skip out a little earlier.
We’re using the Aminah Robinson show as our homeschooling jump-off for the month. I need something to inspire ideas for me and this is loose enough for me to get excited without feeling in constrained.
Brett is interested in doing a cloth painting with Noah. Aminah Robinson uses lots of buttons in her work and we have a dandy button collection so if Noah is willing, we’ll use some in ours, too. I think that Noah might do the drawing and then Brett will transfer it to a bigger canvas and then the two of them will paint it. Noah is never hugely interested in art and I doubt he would be interested in doing all of the painting himself. In fact, I’ll be surprised if he does much at all. But if he directs Brett in the colors to use and helps figure out where we should hot-glue the buttons, I think that will be grand.
There’s also a theater production of a book Robinson illustrated and I’m going to try and get us tickets to that. And we’ll revisit the museum without the crowds.
There’s a lot to talk about inspired by her paintings. Not only is there her very specific African American experience here in Columbus, but she also talks about family (particularly elders), community, and looking inward. I’m not sure where we’ll go with it; I’ll have to leave that up to Noah.
But today we’re going to the zoo because it’s going to be in the upper 50s and tomorrow it drops back down to cold so I want to take advantage of it!
