Now this is clearly one great clip

I’ve queried Mothering off and on since I started writing in earnest; they’ve become my own personal white whale. I just sent out my annual Mothering query via email and got the usual polite and timely reply (in my experience, Ashisha is very nice at turning me down quickly and kindly) saying that she was taking my query to the editorial meeting in a couple of weeks (I’ve gotten that far before but never past that) and adding, “Are you the author of the article in Brain Child about TCS parenting style?” I’m thinking that it bodes well that 1) Ashisha didn’t have to click my link to go read my clips; and 2) she recognized my name.
I’ve got to get some more queries out. I can’t ride this one great byline forever but I’m going to enjoy it for now!

Reviewing diapers
Jan 16, 2003 Writing
I’ve got an assignment coming up in the spring where I’m going to need to review “luxury” cloth diapers. I’d like to specifically review some really adorable made-by-mom diaper covers and dipes. If you know of anyone who wants to be featured or know of a great businessmom whose diapers are not to be missed, will you let me know? The feature will be part of an entire cloth diaper piece and the reviews will be 400 - 500 words all together so I do have limited space.
What I’ll need from the people I review is a sample of their product, which unfortunately I won’t be able to return (we’ll need to photograph it and try it out and, well, you get the picture). ePregnancy has a pretty huge readership. I was feeling guilty about keeping samples but my boss said that to get a fairly small ad in (about the size of the blurbs I write on the products) costs about $5,000 and getting a write-up gives the product an extra boost that straight advertising doesn’t. That assuaged my guilt a bit.
Anyway, if you know of great diapers, please let me know! (I’d love to feature a wool soaker)

How cool is this?!?

I got a note from one of my Brain, Child editors today. She said an editor of a magazine in the Netherlands was interested in reprinting my “You’re Not the Boss of Me” article! I went and looked up the magazine and saw it mentioned as “an influential Dutch alternative newsmagazine” and “the Dutch incarnation of the Utne Reader.” I am so psyched!
I knew that Brain, Child was an excellent clip to have because they have a great rep in the publishing world so I was thrilled about getting them on my resume. Now if this deal goes through I can refer to myself as “an internationally published author.” Not that I would, of course. I mean, not out loud. Just to myself. On bad days I’ll go look into the mirror and whisper cinematically, “Chin up, Dawn, you’re an internationally published author!”
That is, if they take it. If they don’t, I’ll resort to saying, “Don’t let it get you down, Dawn, remember you were very nearly an internationally published author!” See, I’ll take the strokes where I can get ‘em.
p.s. This is the magazine. I don’t read Dutch but it looks kinda nifty, eh?

Help, please?
Jan 15, 2003 Writing
It’s that time of the month again: my article deadline is coming up. The topic this time is when you’re pregnant far away from your family. How did you/do you stay connected through the pregnancy? What about after the baby arrives?
If you have thoughts and want to share, please email me at dawn@thiswomanswork.com!

Quick! Run to the books! Run run!
Jan 14, 2003 Adoption
When completely freaked out (as the post below demonstrates I was today) I immediately rush to stuff my head full of information. I went to the library while Noah was at Junior Great Books and reserved five books on transracial adoption and then found two on the shelves.
I’ll let you know if any of them is particularly useful.
