Oh my, thanks for writing that essay! A while back I read a post from a woman who said that her daughters only eat all natural foods, from scratch and never have sugar (I assume she meant no refined, white sugar). They never ate candy. I think my girls eat healthy foods, but both girls know all about chocolate, and they like it! We always have some candy and/or cookies around. Popsicles or ice cream are not a staple, but they’re nothing super special either. The baby (almost 17 months) now insists on having her own chocolate chip cookie. I usually find 1/2 to 3/4 of a chocolate cookie laying around after she’s gone to bed. My older daughter (4.5) is apt to eat half a candy bar and then ask me to wrap it up and “save it for tomorrow”. So I think they are learning how to limit their intake (and I do place my own limits, after Halloween I made a rule that my older daughter was allowed 5 pieces of candy/day). But when I read about a family where the kids apparently eat no sweets at all, I have a case of the “mommy guilts”!
By the way, I knew a girl in college who subscribed to your theory: in her home junk food was strictly rationed. As soon as she was on her own, she found that she binged on junk food.
