My oldest entries, now available in wordpress!

Today is Ash Wednesday. My best friend from grade school on up through high school is Catholic and she was/is my major source of information on all things Catholic. Actually most of my IRL friends are lapsed Catholics.

Finished the cholesterol article (almost) and am now chugging my sorry way through The Baby Whisperer for a book review. I am not enjoying it.
Not much else to say. I’m in a contemplative mood today, listening to Jane Siberry and wishing I could sing.

The bear is home from preschool today since he’s not quite 100% yet. In fact, he’s sleeping right now and it’s nearly 5:30pm.
Please go to What’s in Rebecca’s Pocket to see the rest of this blog entry:

‘The Food and Drug Administration is weighing whether to approve a Pennsylvania biotechnology company’s proposal to conduct an experiment that would leave hundreds of sick, premature infants in Latin America without proven lifesaving medications [usually given in the United States, but not always available elsewhere]…. In some poor Latin American hospitals, Capetola said, infants with the lung illness may not have access to established drugs and would not be left worse off by placebo treatment. He said infants in the study would receive better care than is currently available because Discovery would donate ventilators and antibiotics for their use.’ … I really think you have to apply one rule to a case like this: would I allow a member of my family to be treated in this way? If the answer is no, then it’s wrong. And if the answer is that these test infants will receive poorer care if the test isn’t run, then I would point out that that’s a separate issue, and, having recognized it, in my estimation you’re morally obligated to spend some of those profits on correcting it.

We finished off the February Russell Crowe Film Festival here at our house (I rented Gladiator a few weeks ago — it was bloody and fabulous, like Lawrence of Arabia for people into gore) by watching The Insider on DVD last night. I had no idea what Jeffrey Wigand went through when he went public. I remember the news when it happened and I just wasn’t that interested. I wish I’d been paying better attention.

Thank god Noah is finally better. Much laundry to do today and then I need to do some research for an article about natural remedies for cholesterol. Just checked in here to add my brother’s site to my links on the left.

Mothering is calling for a boycott of ER because of the kid they killed on the show last week. (The ER writers love to kill off babies for dramatic effect.) This time the child died of measles after his parents chose not to give him the MMR vaccine. I knew the anti-vacc folks would spearhead a giant letter writing campaign. I’m staying out of this one; vaccines are not my issue. I do think the episode was unncessarily alarmist but I’ve got oh so many other things to be offended about these days that I’ve decided to let this one pass me by.

I don’t know what it is but I can’t get Noah Grey’s site to work on my computer. Must be a Mac thang.

I had a nice thing happen yesterday. Someone wrote to tell me they liked a column that I wrote a while ago. That’s always a treat even when it’s someone I know (a friend from my feb-moms days) but what was even nicer about this is that she said someone else directed her to the column. Thanks for the boost, Wendey!
Noah and I are listening to the soundtrack to You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown pretty much non-stop these days. Brett got me Moby’s Play which we’ve both been wanting for awhile but poor Moby just can’t beat Charlie Brown when it comes to my boy.

We’re having some gorgeous (but chilly) weather her in Central Ohio so I raked leaves today and enjoyed seeing the sun again. We’re thinking about what to put in our garden this year and about signing up for a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture). The deal with a CSA is that you buy a share in a farm (or even a large garden) and then you get fresh vegetables each week. As members of this year’s CSA, we will also get honey, herbs, and some fruit. Last year’s outfit gave us eggs, too. Most CSAs have work options, too, where you help out on the farm and then you get a discount on your membership fee. And most CSAs use organic farming techniques although not all are certified organic. The one we’re joining this year is in Granville, OH, a particularly beautiful little town North of Columbus. Since we have a working car, I’m sure we’ll make it up there with Noah.

I’ve been having horrible dreams for the past two nights. The worst being one where Noah was nearly kidnapped and ending with a bloody car crash (not involving family members). I woke up and started thinking about how I could wrap barbed wire all around the top of the fence in our backyard.
Usually I have fabulous, vivid dreams that keep me inspired and focused. I’m not sure why these nightmares have arrived; I’m not under any unusual stress or anything. I’m going to go hunt down some dream interpretation sites.

Here they are:
